DEC. 5, 1996

“The 1996 1A state girls basketball champion Sparta Academy Lady Warriors were presented this framed picture at the Lady Warriors first home game on Mon., Nov. 25. Leon Stinson and Stinson Petroleum furnished the picture and Knud Nielsen Co. furnished the frame. The framed picture will be displayed in the school gym. Shown are Mrs. Essie Mae Stinson, mother of Leon Stinson; Tommy Hartley, local manager of Stinson Petroleum; and members of the 1996 state championship team, Prather Smith, Sally Hartley, Nikki Jones, Shelly Bell, Jenny Harper, Carrie Lambert, Aundria Griffin, Andrea Ward, Janet Kendrick and Heather Booth.”

“Sparta Academy seniors Michael Pate and Lyle Bell were named to the 1996 All-Star Football Team West Division and will compete in the All-Star Game this Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. at Shug Jordan Memorial Field in Selma.
“Michael ended the 1996 football season with 202 carries for 1,635 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was the leading rusher in the Alabama Independent School Association this season. Michael is the only running back in Warrior history to have a 20-touchdown season.
“Lyle also had a very good year. He carried the ball 149 times for 1,608 yards and 10 touchdowns.”

DEC. 3, 1981

“Greg McGraw was named the Most Valuable Player for the Conecuh County High School Tiny Mites football team for the 1981 season. He was named by head coach Gary Darby and assistant coaches Dewayne Godwin and Ricky Reeves. The selection was based on performance on offense and defense. Greg is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen McGraw of Castleberry.”

“Mike Mixon will be Sparta Academy’s only representative on the South Team in the Alabama Private School Association’s annual All-Star Football Game to be held at seven o’clock Friday night in the Shug Jordan Stadium in Selma.
“He was a standout on both offense and defense this year, and his selection for this honor is loudly applauded by his teammates, coaches and the school.”

“The Sparta Academy boys varsity team defeated South Butler, 54-48, in the South Butler Tournament held Nov. 23-25 in Georgiana.
“(Connery) Salter hit 12; (Britt) McNeill, 11; (Vince) Watts, nine; (Scotty) Grace and (Joe) McInvale, eight each; and Wes Brown, (Joey) Johnson and Russ Brown, two each in the win over South Butler.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Russ Raines and Mike Wilson.

DEC. 1, 1966

“Mr. and Mrs. V.P. Smith visited Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Smith in Mobile Saturday and attended the Alabama-Southern Miss football game.”

“Patrick Henry Junior College of Monroeville cheerleaders for 1966-67 were named by the student body in elections recently. They are Elaine Grace, Lyeffion; Christine Payne, Jackson; Peggy Foster, Greenville; Cindy Coate, Thomasville; Carolyn Fendley, Fulton; Carol Knight, head cheerleader, Thomasville; Reylon Melton, Excel; and Prissy Reid, Monroeville.”

“The Evergreen High Aggies will open the 1966-67 basketball season tonight in Pleasant Home with ‘B’ and varsity games on tap.
“Coach Cliff Little has five lettermen back from last year’s club which finished third in this area.
“Right now, there are only six men on the varsity squad. Grover Jackson, Bobby Jernigan, Glenn Bolton and Lavon Tolbert, all lettermen, will be joined by James Adams up from the ‘B’ club as starters. The ‘6th man’ will be Knud Nielsen, also a letterman.
“The Bees are better fortified in numbers with 12 men on the squad, but are short on experience. Candidates are Forrest Simpson, Jimmy Bell, Hollis Tranum, Miles Covin, Sammy White, Tommy Chapman, John Thornley, Claude Nielsen, Arnold Hall, Frank Bentley, Jeff Bilbro and Gerald Salter.”

DEC. 6, 1951

“Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sessions, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cope and Sara and Sam spent the weekend in Birmingham and attended the Alabama-Auburn game.”

“Stanley Raburn, Pete Wells, John Greel Ralls, Jackie Robinson, Billy Mudge Lee and Max Pope attended the Auburn-Alabama football game in Birmingham Saturday.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Tal Stuart and children, Tal and Nell, spent the weekend with Dr. and Mrs. Green and Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Hayes in Birmingham and attended the Alabama-Auburn game.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Blake Campbell spent the weekend in Birmingham and attended the Alabama-Auburn game.”

“The sports scene changes this week from the gridiron to the hardwood floor as the Aggies leave football until next year and start practicing basketball.
“The team has four returning lettermen in the guards, Gwyn Daniels and ‘Red’ Morgan, and also in the forward, Shirley Frazier, and center, Pace ‘Hot’ Bozeman. Several boys up from the ‘B’ team who will prove to be of great value to the varsity are Bayne Petrey, Ward Alexander, Sammy Robison, Wayne Douglas, John Mosley and Billy Lewis.”

DEC. 3, 1936

“The Evergreen basketball players were issued uniforms Monday and had their initial workout Tuesday afternoon. The following boys reported for practice: Wendel Hart, Tom Roundtree, Dick Murphy, James Lane, Kermit Williams, Fred Dean, John Worlund, Clarence Sheffield, Emory Brassell, Carl Wiggins, William Chapman, Laula Middleton, Moye Pugh, Charles Webster, John Cotton and Robert Kelly. The schedule will be announced at a later date. We invite you to see our games and will certainly appreciate your cooperation.”

“Miss Lois Black attended the Alabama-Vanderbilt game in Birmingham last Thursday, where she was the guest of her sister, Mrs. Charlie Cook.”

“W.P. McMillan and James Tate spent the weekend with the former’s parents at Inverness and also attended the Auburn-Florida game in Montgomery.”

“Richard Brassell, who is a student at Auburn, spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. R.R. Brassell. Richard’s friends will be interested to know that he made the freshman football team, playing center, at which position he distinguished himself in the freshman Georgia Tech-Auburn game.”
