“Lady Warriors defeat Lady Cougars, 54-51: The Sparta Academy Lady Warriors and JV Lady Warriors won their games when Sparta traveled to Luverne to take on the Crenshaw Christian Academy Cougars on Tues., Jan. 25, 2000.
“Sparta Lady Warriors 54, Crenshaw 51: Katie Etheridge was the leading scorer for the Lady Warriors with 20 points. Also scoring in double figures was Ashley Hammonds with 17 points. Rounding out the scoring was Callie Ezell with eight points, Laura Wiggins with five points, Mary Robinson with three points and Sally Hartley with one point.
“Crenshaw 100, Sparta Warriors 67: Lee Booker was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 24 points. Also scoring in double figures was Jake Adams with 17 points. Rounding out the scoring were John McKenzie with seven points; Kyle Johnston with six points; Derek Faulkner, Jimmy Hyde and Tyler Petrey, four points each; and Josh Varner, two points.
“Sparta Academy JV Girls 41, Crenshaw 18: Katie Etheridge was the leading scorer for the JV Lady Warriors with 14 points. Also scoring in double figures were Anna Aman with 12 points and Callie Ezell with 11 points. Also putting points on the board were Susan Ivey and Cody Godwin with two points each.”

“Tim Sasser, Sports Director at WEGN in Evergreen, will be presenting this fine trophy at the end of the current basketball season to the team in Conecuh County that has the best overall season. The team with the best record is not the only factor that will be looked into, but also which team goes the farthest in the playoffs. The trophy is sponsored by WEGN AM and FM in Evergreen and Olympic Sporting Goods Store in Brewton.”
“Marshall Middle School cheerleaders are Melissa Windham, Capt. Sharon Cook, Sophie Section, Marsha Bush and Beverly Jacobs. Lateisha Oliver is the mascot. Their sponsor is Mrs. Tammy Newton.”
“Sparta Academy basketball teams swept three games from Greenville on Jan. 18 in Greenville.
“In the boys varsity game, Al Etheridge pumped in 30 points to lead the Warriors to an 84-57 rout. Jim Wagstaff had 17 points; Jim Marino, nine; Danny Reed, Tim Brantley and Mark Rigsby, six each; Jason West, four; Scott Salter, three; and Chris Vonderan, two points.”

“Hart Awards 28 Football Letters: Coach Billy Atkins, head coach of the Troy State University Red Wave, was the featured speaker at the Evergreen Quarterback Club’s Annual Football Banquet last Wednesday night.
“Head Coach Wendell Hart awarded letters to 28 Aggie gridders, including 14 seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and one freshman.
“Letters were presented to seniors Jimmy Bell, Eddie Ralls, Eddie Booth, Bob Neely, John Brantley, Ivon Gomes, Jimmy Lee Perryman, Ronald Parker, Ronald Halford, Jimmy Hamiter, Johnny Salter, Hollis Tranum, Pat Andrews and Ernest Shipp.
“Juniors receiving letters were Larry Peacock, Tim Skipper, Reggie Smith, Eric Pugh, Eddie Reeves, Jeb Barron, Sammy Brown and Randy Coker.
“Sophomore lettermen were Ricky Wilson, John Law Robinson, Larry Tranum, Larry Thomas and Clayton Cobb.
“The lone freshman recipient was Johnny Andrews.”
Bell received the WBLO Outstanding Back of the Year trophy and the Most Valuable Player trophy. Ralls received the Outstanding Lineman of the Year award and the D.T. Stuart Sportsmanship award.
“Cheerleaders receiving letters were seniors Susan Ellis and Martha Blair, juniors Linda Baggett and Mary Stinson and sophomores Martha Grimes and Beth Harper.”

“Tuesday night of last week Coach Arnold Pope’s Repton Bulldogs journeyed to Uriah where they ended up on the short end of a close 60 to 56 decision. (Ray) Blackwell again was the big gun for the Repton team as he burned the nets for 29 points.
“Friday night the Bulldogs returned to their home court and conquered Castleberry by a wide margin of 59 to 42. Blackwell, as usual in his top form, dropped 19 points.”
“Friday night the Evergreen Aggies traveled to Georgiana to turn the tables on a powerful Panther team that had tripped them early in the season by a 35 to 30 score. The Aggies squeezed by the Georgiana five by a slim margin of two points as the buzzer stopped the battle at 50 to 48.
“The high men for the night were Randy White of Evergreen and Morrow of Georgiana with 30 points each. Tommy Melton with nine; Ward Alexander with eight; Ronnie Edson with two; and Buck Lewis with one rounded out the Aggie scoring.
“The Repton Bulldogs looked like a different team Tuesday night as they eked by the Aggies 54 to 53.
“Ray Blackwell was high man for both teams as he constantly filled the bucket and showed more drive than a Mack truck as he scored 31 points.”

“Greenville Stops Aggies: The Butler County High School hoopsters defeated the Evergreen High School Aggies in Greenville Friday night, Jan. 26, by a 15-13 score to break the Aggies win streak at six straight games. The game was a close fought one, Greenville leading 10-6 at the half.
“The Aggies played without the services of two of their first string players, Fountain and R. Kelley, forward and guard respectively.”
“Panthers Down Damascus: The Castleberry Panthers defeated Damascus Fri., Jan. 26, in a close fought game by the score of 25-21.
“Scoring as follows:
“Castleberry (25) – Carr, eight; Gaston, five; G. Deuel, six; C. Deuel, six.
“Damascus (21) – Evans, 12; Sasser, three; Rawls, three; Clement, three.”
“Repton Romps: The Repton High School quintet defeated the Castleberry Panthers Thurs., Jan. 25, by the score of 24-10.”
