“Hillcrest Spring Jamboree: The Hillcrest Spring Jamboree will be held on Friday, May 5, 2000 at 7 p.m. in Evergreen. Admission is $3. Hillcrest’s opponent for the Spring game will be Lanier High School from Montgomery. Lanier is predicted to be the No. 1 team in Class 6A this fall. Come support your Hillcrest Jaguars.”

“Senator Jeremiah Denton (R-AL) announces the appointment of Donald Britton McNeill Jr. to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
“Britt, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Cook, is a graduate of Sparta Academy.
“Britt was very active in varsity sports. He was a member of the varsity football team in grades ninth through 12, the varsity basketball team in the tenth thru the twelfth grades, a member of the varsity track team in grades ninth thru 12. He had the highest academic average for football in the 11th grade and for basketball in the 12th grade.”

“Sparta Academy will hold their athletic banquet this Friday night at seven o’clock in the school gymnatorium. Guest speaker will be Bill Johnson of Montgomery. Mr. Johnson was born in Eutaw, Ala., July 9, 1944. He graduated from Livingston University with a B.S. degree in business administration. Bill was captain of the football team, most valuable player and was selected to the small college All American team. He was also the number three punter in the national and in the two 20 in pass receptions.
“During his pro career, Bill played with the NFL Denver Broncos, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons and with the Orlando Panthers of the Continental Football League. Throughout his career, Bill was primarily a punter and pass receiver, but also saw action at nine different positions. He was chosen the ‘Best Effort of the Week Player’ three times by the Pro Football News Weekly magazine and in 1970, while with the New York Giants, had the longest punt in the NFL.
“Bill, along with his family, now owns and operates a thousand-acre cattle and quarter horse ranch in Montgomery.
“Bill is married to the former Cissy McLendon of Montgomery who was a feature twirler with the University of Alabama Million Dollar Band.
“Tickets are on sale for $5 each and can be purchased at the door.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors defeated Wilcox Academy 9 to 7 in a baseball game played April 25 in Evergreen. Sparta scored nine runs on seven hits while Wilcox scored seven runs on six hits. Winning pitcher for Sparta was Al Etheridge. Tim Brantley and Al had two hits each.”

“The Evergreen Babe Ruth League will begin its 1985 season this Saturday with opening ceremonies starting at 6 p.m. The opening game of the season will begin at 7 p.m. with the Mets playing the Braves. The concession stand will be open and everyone is invited to attend.”

“The Men’s Softball League will meet on May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Courthouse. Men between the ages of 19 and 99 who want to play are asked to sign their name on one of the following lists: Taylor Auto Parts, Wild Brothers Hardware, Brior Auto Parts, B.C. Moore and Sons.”

“NEAL 6, AGGIES 3 – The Neal Eagles got their chance in the top of the fourth inning, and put the game away with a six-run outburst, as they downed the Aggies, 6-3. The Aggies got off to a flying start as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Eric Pugh walked and came home on a triple by Larry Peacock, who scored on a double by Richard Wilson. Not much happened until Neal wrapped it up in the fourth. Two Aggies errors and four Eagle hits provided the winning margin. Larry Peacock hit the first home run of the year for the Aggies to complete the scoring for the afternoon. Larry Peacock, Richard Wilson and Ronald Halford had hits for the Aggies.”

“These Cub Scouts of Den 3 Evergreen Pack 40 enjoyed the Ringling Bros. Circus in Montgomery last week. The boys are Robert Bozeman, Michael Nelson, Sonny Bradley, Rusty Brantley, Gene Owensby and Richard Tate; Danny Arzonico and Tommy Hutcheson; Den Mothers, Mrs. Bob Bozeman and Mrs. David Owensby, and Den Chief Jeb Barron. (Not shown is Artie Wright who was sick and unable to make the trip.)”

MAY 5, 1955

“Ward Alexander Jr., Evergreen High School ace fullback, has accepted a bid from the Alabama High School Athletic Association to play in the annual All-Star game at the University on Aug. 11. The hard-running Aggie fullback made first-string All-State the past two seasons in addition to earning four varsity letters at Evergreen High School. He has accepted a grant-in-aid scholarship to the University of Alabama and plans to enroll there in the fall. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward C. Alexander of this city.”

“Paul And Old Texas Win In Amateur League Play:
“Lyeffion-Paul: Last Sunday, Paul outscored Lyeffion in a high-scoring contest 19 to 14. Home Riley and J.W. Windham pitched for Paul and Douglas Jones and Donald Evers pitched for Lyeffion with Ken Tomlinson doing the catching.
“Lyeffion hitters were led by Bernard Powell and Chester Morgan with a homerun each. McClain and Cobb led the Paul batters with three hits each.

“Old Texas-Mixonville: Old Texas won over Mixonville last Sunday in another high-scoring contest, 16 to 9.
“Old Texas was led at the plate by Clifton Wright with 3-for-3 and Carl Robinson with 3-for-5. Albert Robinson pitched for seven innings and was relieved by Max Wesley who received credit for the victory.
“Sirmons led the Mixonville team with 2-for-3 followed by Harry Pugh with 2-for-4. Lavail Robinson was the losing pitcher.”

“Evergreen (High School) and Monroeville had a grand slam knockout of a baseball game last Thursday. Due to a run in the last inning, Monroeville came out on top with a verdict of 6 to 5. Jimmy Frazier had a good day at the mound. He struck out eight of the Monroeville nine, walked two and pitched six hits were good for six runs. Edson and Alexander both had good days at the plate. Each rapped a homer and Edson got another hit which was good for a single. Alexander knocked into the outfield and ran two bases before he was forced to halt. Jimmy Frazier and J.B. McClain both got base hits, while Robert King stepped up to the plate and slammed a double.
“Both teams played a fine game, and it was just a matter of who got the breaks as to who won the game.”

“Schacht To Perform In Brewton Sunday: Schacht, the Clown Prince of Baseball and sometimes referred to as Baseball’s Goodwin Ambassador will put on his act in Brewton Sunday afternoon before a ball game between the Brewton Millers and the Tallassee Indians.
“Schacht has broken over a 150 minor league attendance records all over the United States and averages traveling around 50,000 miles per season.
“He changes his act each season and is now touring the Southern States with his crowd pleasing performance.
“Proof of his popularity is his appearance at all World Series and All-Star games.
“Brewton baseball officials are preparing for a record-breaking attendance at Liles Park Sunday afternoon for these two attractions. Late comers will probably have trouble finding seats as the performance starts about 2 p.m. or soon after.”

“A decrease of 47 percent in fatal hunting accidents for the 1939-1940 season in Alabama was announced today by Dr. Walter B. Jones, director of the State Conservation Department.”
