“Chuck Wiggins of Montgomery, formerly of Evergreen, had his first ever hole-in-one last week at Dogwood Hills Golf Course in Brewton. Wiggins, who lived in Evergreen from 1988 to 2000, is employed by CSX Railroad. He was in town for the Lynch family reunion. The Lynch family hosts a two-day golf tournament for family members each year during the reunion. The witnesses to Chuck’s hole-in-one were Robert, Ray and Roger Lynch, and it came on Hole No. 2, a par three 150 yards long.”

“Sparta Academy held their athletic banquet on Thurs., April 18, 2002 in the school gym. Coach Mike Gaylor presented the following awards in girls softball: Ashley Nolin, Extra Effort Award; Crystal Bolton, Team Captain; Jessica Armuelles, Team Captain and Best Offensive Player; and Susan Ivey, Best Defensive Player.”

“The Brewton Area YMCA is sponsoring the Joe C. Meriweather Basketball Camp June 3-7. The camp is open to girls ages 8-18 and boys ages 8-14. The camp will be led by former NBA All-Star Joe C. Meriweather and Carolyn Wright, girls varsity coach in Central High School in Phenix City, along with other coaches and volunteers.”

“The Conecuh County Blue Devils will host the Repton High School Bulldogs in a spring football jamboree Friday night. The game will kick off at 7:30 at M.C. Thomasson Stadium in Castleberry and climaxes spring practice for both teams. Admission is $3.”

From Beano Baker’s SPORTSBEAT – “Whether they like or not, the Alabama Crimson Tide is going to have to play football in Auburn sooner or later, so they may as well make it sooner, in 1989.
“According to Auburn officials, the current contract to play in Birmingham’s Legion Field expires after the 1988 game, an Alabama home game. Naturally, the Tigers want their home games played in Auburn, beginning in ’89.
“Alabama officials, however, insist that correspondence between former Athletic Directors Bear Bryant and Lee Hayley constitute an extension to the present agreement. Few knowledgeable people agree with that, and even fewer believe the Tide argument would hold up in a court of law. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, and let’s hope even harder that the state legislature doesn’t become involved. Talk about a political football.
“Even if ‘Bama has its way, the Tide would have to begin visiting Auburn in 1993, unless they want to cancel the agreement between the two schools to play each other on an annual basis. I can’t see that happening, but even if it does, the two teams would still play each other every few years on a home-and-home basis because of the SEC’s rotating schedule.”

“The long awaited player auction will be held for the Evergreen Junior League at the high school auditorium tonight, Thursday, at 7 p.m. This will be a private meeting for team managers and league officials.
“The last minor league try-outs were held yesterday. Major league teams, and their farm teams, are: Dodgers and Chicks, Yankees and Orioles, Red Sox and Hawks, and Giants and Pelicans.
“The ball park will present several changes to the spectators this year. Grass has been planted in the outfield, and the infield is in good shape. The concession stand, which will be operated again this year by the City School P.T.A., is being moved behind home plate. The fence behind home plate has been heightened by six feet, and the bleachers that were behind home plate have been moved to the third baseline. A fence has been erected around the field to keep the spectators out of the field of play.”

“BOY SCOUT NEWS: With studying for exams at its peak there were not many who made it to our meeting Monday night. This, however, did not prevent us from having fun playing a game of ‘Capture the Flag.’ After this we called the meeting together to discuss our plans for the summer. First of all we appointed a committee to bale the paper we have collected thus far.
“We then decided to have a camping trip at Monroeville soon after school ends. This will be mainly for the purpose of passing tests. The date for our Court of Review was set for Monday, the first of June at 7:30. The meeting was ended with the silent Indian Benediction – Scribe.”
