“Asia Jasmine Sullivan, daughter of Mary Sullivan of Castleberry and David Meyer of Bakersfield, Calif., was named the 2012 Conecuh County Distinguished Young Woman this past Saturday night. Asia was the winner of the Scholastic Achievement, Physical Fitness, Self-Expression, Interview and Sister awards during the program. She will represent Conecuh County at the state competition in Montgomery.”

“Retired educator Alex Johnson II passed away Fri., May 6, 2011 with his wife and children at his side.”

“The Evergreen City Council tabled three requests for the use of ‘No Man’s Land’ at their meeting Tuesday night because there is an issue over whether the city or railroad owns the property. The issue of liability insurance was also raised because it could place the city at risk if someone is injured during a function in the area.”

“Sparta Academy announced this week that University of South Alabama head football coach Joey Jones will be the keynote speaker during the school’s graduation ceremony Fri., May 20, at 7 p.m. in Richard Brown Memorial Gymnasium.
“John Johnston of Evergreen, a regional sales manager with Schneider National, will be the guest speaker during the school’s baccalaureate service, which will be held Sun., May 15, at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Baptist Church.”

MAY 9, 1996

“Work began this week tearing out the bridge over Cane Creek on U.S. Highway 83 going to Lyeffion. The project will take between six months and one year to complete. The bridge will be widened and lengthened when it is completed. Traffic is being rerouted during this time out the Middle Road while some people are taking other back roads to get around the detour.”

“The Evergreen City Council met Tuesday night for their first regular meeting for the month of May. The first item before the council was the opening of bids for the landscaping project at city hall.”

“The owners and employees of Cordova Travel Service will celebrate the second anniversary of their regional travel center in Brewton on Tues., May 14, 1996 with an open house reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The office is located at 1023 Douglas Ave., Brewton.”

“The first annual Conecuh Schools Mathematics Tournament for grades four through eight was held May 3, 1996 at Reid State Technical College. Individual winners were presented trophies and certificates by Ronnie Brogden, Superintendent. The trophies were furnished by National Butane Company. Pictured are Grade 4, Marrius Cunningham, runner-up and Shequria Gandy, winner; Grade 5, Vivian Darling, runner-up and Jonathan Bolden, winners; Grade 6, Joshua Gray, runner-up and Damien McMillan, winner; Grade 7, Chris Currie, runner-up and Ebonee Lyons, winner; Grade 8, Laquetta Jenkins, runner-up and Melissa Fedor, winner.”

“Earl finally lets rain fall: Weatherman Earl Windham finally let some rain fall on the parched earth last week. He reports 1.33 inches on May 5 and .07 on May 6. ‘Ole Earl’ was also kind enough to furnish some nice cool nights as the following daily temperatures indicate.”

“Tommy Watson of the Repton High School FFA Chapter exhibited the Grand Champion of the 16th annual Conecuh County FFA and 4-H Market Hog Show held here Monday at the Evergreen Cooperative Stockyard Arena on North Main Street.”

“Jimmy Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson of Route 1, Evergreen, was recently selected as one of the outstanding students who will receive an expense free tour of Washington, D.C., sponsored by Southern Pine Electric Cooperative.”

“Bill McKenzie, president and administrator of Evergreen Hospital, Inc., was reelected president of the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce at its annual Promotion Banquet held on May 5 at the Holiday Inn with approximately 62 people attending. David T. Hyde Jr. presented the nominating committee’s report.”

“Radio Station WBLO of Evergreen will be featured on the ‘News Journal’ program on WKRG TV, Channel 5 of Mobile this Saturday afternoon at 5 o’clock.”

MAY 12, 1966

“Capt. Mark S. Sowell has recently returned from Vietnam where he served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. On June 1, he and his family will leave for his next assignment in Atlanta, Ga., where he will serve as an assistant professor of Military Science at Georgia Tech for the next three years.”

“Sgt. E-5 John Wayne Crutchfield left Friday for Vietnam where he’ll be stationed for 13 months duty.”

“Three persons lost their lives and a fourth was seriously injured when this car crashed head-on with another about five miles south of Evergreen on Highway 31. The crash happened around 6:00 Thursday night at the ‘coal kiln curve.’”

“Edwin C. Page Jr. has resigned as chairman of the Conecuh County Democratic Executive Committee, a post he has held for 14 years. He announced his resignation to the committee last Wednesday after the official canvass of the May 3 election was completed.”

“The third annual Conecuh County Market Hog Show for FFA and 4-H members will be held Monday at the Conecuh Cooperative Stockyard Livestock Arena here. Seventy-seven hogs are to be exhibited in the show which is sponsored by the Evergreen Kiwanis Club and State Department of Agriculture and Industries in cooperation with the Department of Vocational Agriculture Education and Extension Service of Auburn University.”

“C.L. Kamplain is show chairman, and D.C. Fleming is advisory chairman.”

MAY 10, 1951

“The Courant has been informed by Congressman George Grant that he has been advised by the General Services Administration that decision has been reached to convert the basement space at the local Post Office Building into office space for the use of other federal agencies. Mr. Grant states he has been advised work on the project will begin soon after July 1, 1951 and completed as soon thereafter as possible.
“There is considerable space in this basement which when completed and fitted out will make a number of desirable offices.”

“An injured white man was found along the railroad tracks on the outskirts of town here early Tuesday morning. A card in the man’s wallet identified him as Robert Patterson of Curley, Ala. He was discovered about six o’clock by a railroad worker on his way to work.
“Patterson was unconscious when found and suffering from cold and exposure. Sheriff John Brock and Coroner E.A. Price went to the scene about a mile north of town on the L&N right-of-way. Patterson was taken to Escambia Hospital in Brewton by a Cope Funeral Home ambulance.
“According to the sheriff, Patterson had a broken leg and head lacerations. He had regained consciousness and eaten some food by Wednesday, but had not then explained what happened to him. It is through he fell from a train.
“Sheriff Brock has attempted to notify the nearest of kin, a Ruth Patterson of Gurley, Ala., listed on a card in his wallet through the sheriff of Madison County. The sheriff stated that the man was neatly dressed and clean.”
