“William Wesley Jeffries Jr., 73, of Evergreen died Tues., July 13, 1999 in Montgomery.
“Jeffries joined the State Troopers on July 6, 1952. He was made captain and named Post Commander on June 10, 1970. He held this position until his retirement in February of 1986.”
“The new home of the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department is nearing completion. The building, which will be located on Rural Street next to the City Shop, is very near completion. Skipper’s General Contractors of Evergreen won the bid on the project.”
“The Auburn journalism department said goodbye to Associate Professor Gillis Morgan, who retired at the end of spring quarter after 22 years of teaching.
“Morgan, 65, has taught courses in beginning newswriting, reporting, feature writing, editing, advanced reporting and journalism basics.
“Glennis Curry, a student in Morgan’s spring quarter reporting class, said, ‘He’s taught me not to let journalism get me too uptight and stress me out. I like his laid back style, and he stressed the importance of a deadline.’
“Morgan, who is from Evergreen, said he always knew he wanted to be a newspaper reporter when he was in high school.
“Morgan has received a number of awards as a journalist. He won Associated Press awards in 1964 and 1965 for spot news and the AP Sweepstakes Award in 1965.”

“Glenn Edwin Lanier announces that he has qualified for the office of Conecuh County Commission, District 3.
“Lanier graduated from Conecuh County High School where he was an active member and officer in many clubs. He graduated with an A.S. degree from Jefferson Davis Junior College in Brewton in 1969. He then attended Auburn University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1972. He was on active duty with the Air Force from August 1971 to April 1972 when he returned to the Alabama Air National Guard.”
“Karen Varner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Varner, won four awards at the Summer’s Most Beautiful Pageant held June 19 in Monroeville.”
“Jonathan G. Floyd whose former guardians are Mr. and Mrs. Willie M. Philyaw of Evergreen, Ala., has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of first lieutenant.
“Floyd is a base electrical engineer at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., with the 3380th Civil Engineering Squadron.”
“Airman Benjamin Salter, son of Mary Salter of Rural Route 2, Evergreen, Ala., has been assigned to Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., after completing Air Force basic training.”
“Horace Lee Smith enlisted in the United States Navy at Andalusia on June 22. Horace is the son of Mrs. Lucille Smith of Evergreen.”

“County Masonic Conference: The annual Conecuh County Masonic Conference was held Wed., July 10, at Repton Lodge with 17 members of the five county lodges attending. Visitors from Mobile, Florida and other places were present.
“S.A. McGraw of Downing Lodge 580 at Castleberry who has been Conference Secretary for 26 years was re-elected for another term. The conference also voted to present him with a 25-year pin.
“A splendid meal was served at noon in the school lunchroom by members of the Eastern Star. Conecuh County Masons will continue to pay ten cents per member per year for support of the conference.”
“Melvin Morris celebrated his 99th birthday on July 1 when his neighbors gave a birthday party for him at the Bermuda Baptist Church.”
“Earl C. Deuel is a member of the organization that has played a major role in the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission.
“He is an aerospace engineer in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala.
“The huge Saturn V rocket that lifted Apollo 11 from earth was developed under the direction of the Marshall Center, NASA’s largest organization.
“Deuel, a graduate of Conecuh County High School, Castleberry, received his B.S.A.E. degree in 1949 from Auburn University.
“His wife, Mildren, is the daughter of Sim P. Pruitt of Rt. 1, Castleberry.”

“Offices on the lower floor of the Conecuh County Courthouse are being air conditioned this week it is announced by J.H. Tranum, Chairman of the Board of Directors.”
“Cpl. Calvin S. Pruitt is expected home from Newfoundland around August 16. He has been stationed there since April 1953 and will have an assignment in the United States after spending a leave here with his parents.”
“O.E.S. OFFICERS INSTALLATION TO BE HELD FRIDAY NIGHT: An open installation of officers of Conecuh Chapter No. 217, O.E.S., will be held Friday night, July 16, at 8 p.m. at the Masonic Hall.
“The Officers conducting the ceremony will be Mrs. Irma Southall, Mr. Joe Southall, Mrs. Mary Salter, Mrs. Marion Morgan, Mrs. Bertha McMillian, Mrs. Mary Lou Morrison and Mrs. Frances Mixon.”
“Cpl. Ottis David Smith, who has been in Germany the past 18 months with the 26th Inf. Regt. Stationed at Bamburg, returned home last week and received his discharge at Ft. Jackson, S.C. Cpl. Smith was born and reared in Conecuh County near Herbert. He will make his home in Leesburg, Fla., where he will be employed by Leesburg Fertilizer Co.”
“Charles Joseph King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard H. King, Rt. C, recently enlisted in the Navy, and is now receiving his recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif.”

“National Guard Leaves For Camp: Battery ‘C’ 117th Field Artillery left Sunday by motor convoy for the annual 15-day encampment. The 117th, with other National Guard units, will encamp at Brooklyn, Miss., 20 miles from Hattiesburg.
“The regiment has been training at Camp Jackson, S.C. and other Carolina camps for several years. Last summer, the entire National Guard of the South participated in maneuvers on the Mississippi coast.
“Approximately 60 enlisted men under command of Capt. W.D. Lewis with Lieutenants Homer Kindig and John C. Holman, assisting, went to camp.
“Eleven batteries are included in the 117th Field Artillery regiment and will attend the Mississippi encampment. They are Enterprise, Dothan, Troy, Elba, two from Andalusia, Evergreen, Luverne and Greenville.
“All officers of the regiment attended a school held in Elba Armory recently, where they received camp instructions.
“Major B.C. Anderson of the regular army, who has served the regiment as instructor during the past four years, will be transferred to the Hawaiian Islands soon. Several officers lauded Major Anderson in farewell speeches in the Elba meeting and a handsome gift will be presented him in appreciation of his services.”
“MASONS TO MEET AT ONEONTA RALLY: Oneonta, Ala. – When the delegates and visitors to the Second Annual Northeast Alabama Masonic Rally gather in Oneonta on Thurs., July 27, Ency. F. Yeilding, Grand Master of the State of Alabama will be present along with all other Grand Lodge Officers of the State.”
