National Geographic names 2013 Adventurer of the Year

National Geographic announced earlier this month that Felix Baumgartner has been named as the winner of the 2013 People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year Award. Voting for the award was done through National Geographic’s Web site, and over 55,000 ballots were cast this year.

Baumgartner, a 43-year-old Austrian BASE jumper, is best known for making history on Oct. 14, 2012 when he became the first person to break the speed of sound without the protection of propulsion of a vehicle. He did so by jumping out of a capsule that was at an altitude of 127,852 feet, that is, a little over 24 miles. He set a number of world records on that day and amazingly lived to tell about it.
