“Mrs. Lila Salter celebrates her 103rd birthday today, March 20. She is the mother of 13 children, 10 of whom are living, and has 90 grandchildren, 192 great-grandchildren and 106 great-great-grandchildren. She lives with her daughter, Jane Grace, at 111 North Jordan St., Evergreen, and has one living sister, Mrs. Willie D. Dailey of Green Street. Neighbors and friends are welcome to come by between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. today.”
“The 41st Annual Conecuh County 4-H and FFA Steer Show will be held here Monday morning at nine o’clock at the Evergreen Cooperative Stockyard Livestock Arena. There will be 55 exhibitors of steers and heifers.”
“A private dining room at the Evergreen Holiday Inn was dedicated as the ‘Henry Sessions Room’ last Thursday morning. Shown at the dedication are Judge of Probate Frank Salter, Commission Chairman David Burt, Mayor Pat Poole, Innkeeper Gerold Galloway, Mrs. Henry (Sue) Sessions, John Henry Sessions (grandson of the late Henry Sessions), Mrs. Louise Kendall, Mrs. John Crum (Sheila) Sessions and John Crum Sessions, son of the late Henry Sessions. Galloway said the room was named in memory of the late Mayor Sessions because he was instrumental in the Holiday Inn locating here and in recognition of his unstinting service to the people of Evergreen.”

“Blocker receives Bronze Star Medal: Army Sgt. First Class William D. Blocker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley L. Blocker, Castleberry, recently received the Bronze Star Medal near Long Binh, Vietnam.
“He was presented the Bronze Star Medal for Distinguishing Himself Through Meritorious Service in connection with military operations against hostile forces in Vietnam.
“Sgt. Blocker received the award while assigned as a Highway Operations Noncommissioned Officer in Headquarters Co., 4th Transportation Command.
“The sergeant entered the Army in 1953 and was last stationed in Germany. He is a 1953 graduate of Conecuh County High School, Castleberry.”
“Dr. and Mrs. John Hagood of Eufaula and Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Hagood Sr. attended a symposium on maxillofacial rehabilitation at the University of Alabama in Birmingham last weekend.”
“Dean Masonic Lodge No. 112 will sponsor a special program on Drug Abuse at the Brooklyn Baptist Church March 27 at 7 p.m.
“Rev. H.C. Botts from Milton, Fla., will be guest speaker. Films from Whiting Field on Drug Abuse will be shown.
“The public is invited to attend this special program.”
“The Evergreen City Council’s final March meeting Tuesday night was ‘short and sweet,’ according to Miller Sellers City Clerk.”

“The Conecuh County Teachers Association announced this week the election of new officers and committee chairmen for the year 1956-57. The new officers are as follows:
“President, Mrs. M.C. Thomasson, Castleberry; Vice President, Mrs. Ethel Irwin, Lyeffion; Secretary, Miss Helen Barlow, Castleberry; Treasurer, Miss Demoval Hagood, Repton, Chairman of Program Committee, Mrs. Marie Pate, Castleberry, Chairman of Legislative Committee, Mr. J.F. Clements, Brooklyn; Chairman of Necrology, Mrs. Grover Holland, Brockton.
“Miss Carolyn Brown, retiring President, has been elected as Vice President of AEA District 1, which includes Conecuh, Escambia, Baldwin, Mobile, Monroe, Washington and Clarke counties.”
“Girl Scouts Present Program At Rotary Club: Two leaders and four Girl Scouts presented a program on the Girl Scout movement at the Rotary Club meeting this week.
“Mrs. D.T. Stuart, leader of Troop 2, introduced the following scouts, who gave short talks as indicated: Nell Stuart, History of Girl Scouts in the U.S.; Joyce Williamson, Why Girls Like Scouting; Barbara Bewley, History of Girl Scouts in Evergreen, and Anna Brantley, Looking into the Future.
“Mrs. R.G. Kendall Jr. thanked the Rotary Club for letting the girls tell about their troops and for the interest show by Rotarians.”

“The Alabama State Division of Forestry in its work plans for Conecuh County has included the construction of a lookout tower to be erected in the vicinity of Belleville. A tower in this vicinity would be located on the divide between the Burnt Corn Creek and the Murder Creek.
“The plans provide for the construction of a telephone line to connect this tower with the existing towers located in Conecuh and adjoining towers.
“The construction of this tower would bring the number in Conecuh County to a total of four towers.”
“W.L. Stripling Home Destroyed By Fire: Fanned by a brisk March wind, the home of W.L. Stripling, known as the E. Lundy place, was reduced to ashes Thursday night about seven o’clock. Practically all the belongings of its residents were destroyed, only one or two pieces of furniture and a few articles of clothing being saved. The fire was said to have started from a faulty kitchen flue. The efforts of the fire department were hampered by the fact that the nearest fire plug was several hundred yards away and by the time a hose could be played on the building, fire was beyond control.”
“I.D. King Home Damaged By Fire Tuesday: Fire, said to have been caused by a defective flue, caused slight damage to the home of L.D. King Sr. about nine o’clock Tuesday morning. The fire was discovered very soon after sparks had set the roof on fire, and by the time the fire department arrived, the flames had been extinguished. The extent of damages was a few square feet of the roof.”
