Is 'Resident Evil: Retribution' the best in the 'Resident Evil' series?

Earlier today, I finally got around to watching “Resident Evil: Retribution” for the first time. This sci-fi action movie, which was released in September 2012, is the fifth installment in the “Resident Evil” film series, which is based on the “Resident Evil” video game series.

Rated R and 96 minutes long, “Resident Evil: Retribution” was written, produced and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and the movie stars his wife, Milla Jovovich, who has played the role of Alice in all of the “Resident Evil” movies. Other cast members included Li Bingbing, Kevin Durand, Aryana Engineer, Oded Fehr, Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe, Mika Nakashima, Shawn Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Salmon and Johann Urb.

In this installment of the series, Alice wakes up in an underwater Russian testing facility, where the Umbrella corporation has been running sophisticated demonstrations for potential buyers of the deadly T-Virus. The world’s population has essentially been wiped out by the virus, and the Umbrella corporation has sent in a small rescue team to remove Alice from the testing facility. The facility’s artificial intelligence computer security system does its best to stop them, and almost succeeds in taking out the entire team.

If you liked the first four “Resident Evil” movies, you’ll enjoyed “Resident Evil: Retribution.” This movie includes plenty of action, martial arts, fight scenes, gunplay, creatures, zombies and lots of other cool stuff from the earlier movies. The only thing this movie doesn’t have that the other did is those undead dogs that plaqued Alice in some of the earlier movies. I particularly liked the Russian-Cold War elements in the movie, especially the old Russian submarines and the zombie trenchcoat soldiers that gave Alice and her rescue team such a hard time. All of that was especially well done in the movie.

As mentioned earlier, “Resident Evil: Retribution” is the fifth installment in the “Resident Evil” movie series. The other movies in the series include “Resident Evil” (2002), “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” (2004), “Resident Evil: Extinction” (2007) and “Resident Evil: Afterlife” (2010). Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that a sixth installment in the series is in the works and will be released in either 2014 or 2015. There are even rumors floating around out there about a possible seventh installment in the series.

The “Resident Evil” video game series dates back to 1996 with the release of “Resident Evil,” a survival horror video game. Other games in the series have included “Resident Evil 2” (1998), “Resident Evil 3: Nemesis” (1999), “Resident Evil Code: Veronica” (2000), “Resident Evil Zero” (2002), “Resident Evil 4” (2002), “Resident Evil 5” (2009), “Resident Evil: Revelations” (2012) and “Resident Evil 6” (2012). As of last summer, sales of these titles have totaled over 50 million units.

In the end, how many of you have seen “Resident Evil: Retribution”? What did you think about it? Which of the “Resident Evil” movies is your favorite? Why? Which of the “Resident Evil” video games is your favorite and why? Let us know in the comments section below.
