Local weather reporter Harry Ellis reported .18 inches of rain on Nov. 4, .72 inches on Nov. 5, .01 inches on Nov. 9 and .82 inches on Nov. 10. He reported a high temperature of 81 degrees on Nov. 10 and lows of 39 degrees on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8.

“There were several Veterans Day programs held throughout the area last Friday. Pictured at top is Richard Brown, who was the guest speaker at the Sparta Academy program. Brown served in the United States Navy in World War II and in the Army in the Korean War. Pictured at bottom is the program at Evergreen Junior High. Hillcrest Band Director LaFrancis Davis, who is also a Major in the Army National Guard, was the guest speaker for their program.”

“Terry Jackson was the guest of honor at the Marine Corps birthday party held last Thursday at the David L. Burt Agricultural Center. Pictured with Jackson are Lee F. Smith, oldest Marine present; Maurice Bozeman, who cut the cake; Jackson; and Myles Anthony, youngest Marine present.”

“The Castleberry Town Council is going to consider purchasing a garbage truck to begin their own garbage pickup in the near future. Mayor Douglas Graham brought up the possibility at their regular meeting Tues., Nov. 5.”

“The Conecuh County Commission and Sheriff Tracy Hawsey discussed the hiring of a full-time nurse for the Conecuh County Detention Facility at the commission meeting Tues., Nov. 12.”

Local weather reporter Earl Windham reported no rain between Nov. 3 and Nov. 9. He reported a high temperature of 82 degrees on Nov. 4 and lows of 40 on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8.

“Mrs. Mable Amos, former two-term Secretary of State and Recording Secretary for seven Alabama governors, was guest of honor at the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce’s 6th annual Heritage Day Festival Saturday. Mrs. Katie Sue Burt, chairperson of the County Commission, presented a corsage on behalf of the commission, and Mayor Pat Poole gave ‘Miss Mabel’ a key to the city.”

“Evergreen Mayor Pat Poole signs a proclamation designating the week of Nov. 15-21 as American Education Week. Looking on are David Cook Jr., chairman of the Conecuh County Board of Education, and Superintendent Steve Coker.”

“The Evergreen Chamber of Commerce announces that the annual Christmas parade will be held Sat., Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. Plans are shaping up for this to be the largest and best parade ever.
“Mrs. Mamie Jo Lambert, parade chairman, states that through the generous contributions of local businesses and industries more prize money than ever will be offered for the winning floats.”

“Miss Homecoming’s float highlighted the homecoming parade staged Friday by Evergreen High School. Miss Homecoming is Sue Shavers, and her attendants are Libby Faulkner and Sheryl Fluker.”

“Sgt. J.T. Smelley is now the sergeant in charge of the Evergreen Post, Alabama State Troopers. A veteran of nine years with the Troopers, he comes here from Demopolis.”

“R.L. (Bobby) Heath of Enterprise has been named officer in charge of the Evergreen Post Office, succeeding Bayne Petrey who was promoted to a postal service management position in Dothan.
“Heath has been with the service for 10 years and is a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, having served as a master sergeant in the Army artillery.”

“Three offices in the Courthouse will be open all day this Saturday instead of closing at noon. This is being done for the convenience of those who have yet to purchase their motor vehicle license tags.
“Judge of Probate Frank T. Salter, Tax Assessor Delma E. Bowers and Tax Collector J. Marvin Johnston all said they would keep their office open all day Saturday.”

“Democrat Henry J. Kinzer edged Republican David T. Hyde for re-election as County Solicitor to highlight voting in Conecuh Tuesday.
“Kinzer had 1,940 votes to Hyde’s 1,778 in the closely contested race for Solicitor.”

NOV. 14, 1957

“L&N train smashes car Sunday, four are killed: Four persons were killed when a L&N passenger train struck a car stalled on a crossing about three miles above Evergreen Sunday afternoon. All four were passengers in the car. The driver was not injured.”

“The Evergreen Junior Chamber of Commerce has voted to sponsor the annual Christmas Carnival again this year in cooperation with the merchants of Evergreen. Date for the carnival is to be Wed., Dec. 4.”

“Prominent Lady Dies Unexpectedly Nov. 6: Mrs. Kate Taliaferro Wild, age 78, prominent and greatly beloved lady of this city, passed away unexpectedly after only a few hours illness Wed., Nov. 6. She suffered a heart attack at her home on Rural Street and was carried to the local hospital where she died a short time later.”

“Tom Cope, a member of the staff at the A.P.I. Extension Service Experiment Station at Auburn, was guest speaker at the meeting of the Evergreen Rotary Club Thursday at the Methodist Church.”

“Local Lumberman Is Better of Injuries: J.H. (Jack) Newman, well known and prominent lumberman of this city who operates a lumber business at Niceville, Fla., is recovering from severe injuries which he sustained last Wednesday on his lumber yard when a hyster backed into him.”

NOV. 12, 1942

“Charles Gilmore left Saturday for Florence to take a Radio course.”

“Buford A. Nall, also son of Mr. and Mrs. Nall, has been promoted recently to the rank of corporal. He was inducted into the Army in August 1941 and has been in the Panama Canal Zone since Dec. 1941.”

“Elsewhere in this issue will be found a statement from Lamar Kelly, recently elected Representative from this county, in which he announces his resignation of this office. Mr. Kelly has filed his resignation with Gov. Frank Dixon requesting that it become effective immediately.
“Mr. Kelly was recently selected by the Federal government for a special type of service and is now at Fort Oglethorpe taking a six weeks training course. The nature of his work is confidential and secret, therefore no definite information is available.”

“The Conecuh County Grand Jury which was empaneled by Judge F.W. Hare Monday morning of this week completed its deliberations late Tuesday afternoon and made its report to the court, thereby perhaps setting up an all time record. Despite the fact there had been no court and no session of the Grand Jury since last Fall, this body of men completed the work which came before it in two days. Judge Hare commended the jurors for the splendid service which they had rendered. Twenty one true bills were found in the two days session.”
