Ellis reported .06 inches of rain on Jan. 6, .50 inches on Jan. 8 and .70 on
Jan. 9. He reported low temperatures of 14 degrees on Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 and a
high of 73 on Jan. 8.
“Travelers on I-65 South met
with a surprise Tuesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer flipped and completely
blocked the southbound lane. The driver of the truck escaped without injury.
The truck was traveling north when a green sedan entered the interstate at the
Evergreen exit at Highway 83. Instead of ramming a second vehicle, the driver
ditched his truck, at which time it flipped on its side. Alabama State Troopers
began to reroute traffic at the Owassa exit, where many drivers were stopping
to ask directions. Warnings about congested traffic in the southbound lane were
issued as far north as Montgomery.”
“Approximately 200 people
attended a meeting of the Conecuh County Board of Education which was held in
the cafeteria at Repton School. The main topic of interest was the
reestablishment of Repton and Conecuh County Junior High School as K-12
schools. A committee was formed to look into ways of bringing back students who
have left the system.”
“Army Spec. Derrick E.
Richardson has returned from Camp Doha, Kuwait, in support of an exercise
termed ‘Intrinsic Action ’98.’”

“Kim Watson, a senior at
Monroe Academy, won the title of Conecuh County’s 1984 Junior Miss last October
in the program sponsored by the Pilot Club of Evergreen. She is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Watson. Kim will be in Montgomery Jan. 14-21 to represent
Conecuh County in the 1984 Alabama Junior Miss Pageant. The finals will be
Sat., Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. at Robert E. Lee High School.”
“High bids on the sale of a
house and the timber on 90 acres of land to be developed as an industrial park
were accepted by the Evergreen Industrial Board at a meeting Friday morning.”
“Council elections by
districts is approved: A resolution providing for the election of the five
members of the Evergreen City Council by districts was approved by the Council
at a called meeting Tuesday night.
“City Attorney Tommy Chapman
presented the proposed five council districts plan to the council. He had been
instructed to draw up a plan and map to divide the city into five districts as
equal as possible in population for consideration.
“Chapman said that the next
step is to present this plan and map to the U.S. Justice Dept. for approval.”

“Shotgun Blasts Kill Dannelly
In Bed At Camden Home – CAMDEN – The shotgun slaying of Wilcox County Probate
Judge William E. (Bill) Dannelly remained unsolved Monday night, but state
investigators indicated a break was near.
“Dannelly was killed by five
shotgun blasts late Sunday in the bedroom of his home three miles east of here.
“State troopers Maj. Bill
Jones, head of the special investigation team that arrived here before dawn
Monday, refused comment on the investigation.”
“Pleiku, Vietnam – Army
Private First Class Ernest G. Beasley, 20, son of Mrs. Myrtic Hooks, Owassa,
was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division Dec. 5 near Pleiku, Vietnam, as a
cannoneer.”
“Marine Private First Class
Harold R. Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Wright of 235 Pecan St.,
Evergreen, is serving with the First Marine Division in South Vietnam.”
“Evergreen City Council
accepted the low bid for an automatic control system for the city water system
at its meeting Tuesday night. The controls will turn the well pumps and the
high service pumps on and off and will assure that the tank will never get too
low or overflow.”
“Ft. Benning, Ga. – Duncan M.
Roberts III, 24, son of Mrs. Sarah B. Snowden, Evergreen, was commissioned an
Army second lieutenant after graduating from the Infantry Officer Candidate
School, Ft. Benning, Ga., Dec. 10.”

“Approximately 190 county
residents registered and qualified to vote during the Conecuh County Board of
Registrars’ session last week.”
“Conecuh County is moving
forward on an ambitious road paving program, according to J.H. Tranum, Chairman
of the Board of Directors. In an interview Wednesday, Mr. Tranum said that
approximately 23 miles of roads were to be paved as soon as the weather is
favorable this spring.”
“Monday was election night
for the Evergreen Junior Chamber of Commerce which met at the Evergreen
Community House. Gordon Riley was elected president to serve the first six
months of 1954, succeeding President Gene Cotter.”
“Mrs. Freda Hollon has
returned to resume her duties with the Transocean Airway in Oakland, Calif.
after several weeks visit with her mother, Mrs. C.A. Beasley.”
“KOKURA, Japan – Army Cpl.
Leo Grace of Evergreen, Ala., recently spent a seven-day rest and recuperation
leave in Kokura, Japan.
“Normally stationed in Korea
with the 4th Signal Battalion. Grace stayed at one on Japan’s best resort
hotels and enjoyed many luxuries unobtainable on the war-torn peninsula.
“The corporal is a lineman in
the battalion’s Company A.”
“Rev. W.M. Sproles, W.T.
Chapman, Mrs. C.A. Beasley and Mrs. Cecil Hagood attended a special session of
the Alabama Conference in Montgomery Tuesday.”

JAN. 12, 1939
“Tuesday’s hog sale was the
largest in the history of the county, according to those who keep up with such
events. A total of 851 head was sold for the sum of $8,566.99. Ten cars were
required to move the hogs and one of these was double-decked which in reality
amounted to 11 cars. The records show that there were 213 loads handled,
aggregating a total weight of 144,465 pounds.”
“Announcement is being made
this week of the opening of Stanford’s Seed Store on Rural Street in the same
store occupied by Owens Grocery. The owner and proprietor of the new
establishment is Joe L. Stanford who has been connected with Poultry Products
Co. of Montgomery for the past 12 years.”
“It was announced this week
that E.N. Clark, manager of Evergreen Hotel has leased the Conecuh Hotel and
will take operation of it just as soon as repairs, which are underway, can be
completed.”
“After having engaged in the
mercantile business at Castleberry for the past 29 years, 27 of those in the
same building, A.H. Riley Monday sold his interest to two of his longtime
employees, the Misses Eunice and Bertie Wright, who will continue the business
at the same location under the firm name, “Wright Sisters.”
“Mr. Riley began his business
career in Castleberry in 1909 when he opened a store in the old Masonic
building, still standing.”
