JAN. 22, 1981

“Kay Hawsey, nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Houston Hawsey, showed the older hunters ‘how to do it’ when she killed this fine ‘Tom.’ The turkey weighed 13 pounds and had an eight-inch beard. Kay killed the turkey on Tuesday morning in Monroe County.”

“Aggies upset Monroe Tigers: Evergreen came back after the holiday break on Jan. 6 to win their biggest game of the season as they defeated the previously unbeaten Monroeville Tigers by a score of 65-60. The Aggies were paced by Johnny Allen with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Following were Horace Smith and Michael Lampley with 14 points each.”

“The Warriors defeated Fort Deposit in a game played there Friday night, 74-68. Terry Shipp hit 23 points to lead the Warrior scoring. Jeff Johnson had 16 points, Ed Carrier, 10; Vince Watts, seven; Joe McInvale, Joey Johnson and Wes Brown, four each; Russ Raines, three; and Scotty Grace, one.”

“Troy Smith, 10, of McKenzie is justifiably proud of this fine trophy 10-point buck that he killed Saturday. Troy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith of McKenzie.”

“Clint Ward of Fairview killed this coyote, he refused to say where, but it was in the county. Coyotes have become more prevalent in this area, according to sportsmen and wildlife experts.”

JAN. 27, 1966

“Blue Devils dance to county title: Coach Wayne Pope’s Blue Devils of Conecuh County High waltzed to another county basketball championship in the annual tournament held Thursday and Friday nights in Castleberry.
“Castleberry trounced the Aggies of Evergreen High 94 to 51 in the varsity finals. Earlier, Castleberry rolled to an easy 87 to 59 win over Lyeffion’s Yellow Jackets in the opening round.
“Ron Reeves hit for 27 points; Ron Wilson, 21; Don Janes, 19; and Ron Jones, 15, to pace the Blue Devils past Evergreen. Glen Bolton poured in 20 points, and Lavon Tolbert 11 for the Aggies.
“Against Lyeffion it was Janes with 25; Wilson, 22; Reeves, 14; and Jones, 12, leading the Blue Devils. David Booker hit 26; Jimmy Morris, 12; Homer Chavers, 10; and Harold Brown, nine, for the Yellow Jackets.
“Castleberry also dominated the all-tournament teams, placing Wilson, Janes and Reeves on the varsity selection. Tolbert of Evergreen and Booker of Lyeffion completed the all-stars.”

“The Evergreen Quarterback Club ended the 1965 season with a very successful record. Reorganized prior to the opening of football season, the Quarterbacks had numerous accomplishments under the leadership of President Waynard Price, Vice President Al Bell and Secretary-Treasurer Howard Fore.”

JAN. 25, 1951

“Evergreen Aggies Edge Repton Bulldogs 27-23: The Evergreen High School Aggies evened up their record with county teams here Tuesday night by edging Repton’s Bulldogs, 27-23. Evergreen now holds wins over Repton and Lyeffion and has lost to Repton and Castleberry. The win was Evergreen’s fifth in 11 starts this season.
“Billy Mudge Lee played good ball in his third start since becoming eligible. Lee hit for 12 points to lead the scorers and got a lot of rebounds. Daniels had five; Jeff Moorer, five; Ed Hooks and Billy Watson, two each; and Shirley Frazier, one point for the Aggies.
“Harold Butts topped the Bulldog scorers with nine points on two field goals and five foul shots. Daniels had seven for runner-up honors. Joe Kelly with four; Junior McMillan with two; and Burt with one, rounded out the scoring.
“After playing fairly good ball for three periods the Evergreen Bees fell behind in the final minutes and lost a 26-21 decision to the Repton Bees.”

“Evergreen Aggies Edge Pleasant Home 43 to 37: The Evergreen High Aggies registered their fourth win of the season and their first since before Christmas here last Thursday by edging Pleasant Home, 43 to 37, in Memorial Gym.
“Gwyn Daniels and Billy Mudge Lee led the scorers with 10 points each. It was Lee’s first appearance on the court since the 1948-49 season. Jeff Moorer bagged seven points; Ed Hooks, six; and Gillis Morgan and Shirley Frazier, five each.”
