“County Native Is Now In
100th Year: A native of Conecuh County recently observed his 100th birthday at
his home in Texas. His son called to tell The Courant of the event.
“John Henry Evans was born in
the Mill Beat community on Feb. 3, 1863. Mr. Evans left this county at the age
of 16 and moved to Texas, where he has lived since that time.”
“Miss Lyeffion of 1963 is
Peggy Tanner, an 11th grade student. Peggy was crowned at a program held in the
school auditorium Thursday night.”

after that severe cold. The sunshine makes you feel good and want to get out
and do things. This has been a bitter winter and one that will not be soon
forgotten. Records have tumbled and fuel bills have climbed. More is in store
if that old prophet the groundhog can be believed. He for sure saw his shadow.”
“H. Carl Wiggins, former
Evergreen resident, has been named area sales manager of Bradley & Baker
Division of Columbia Nitrogen Corp. of Columbia, S.C.”
“The new T.R. Miller High
School was formally dedicated at ceremonies here this week.”

FEB. 5, 1948
“What is believed to be
somewhat of an all time record in the poll tax collections was made this year,
according to J.H. Tranum, tax collector. A total of 1,196 persons paid this tax
this year in Conecuh County and the amount they aggregated $3,220.50.”
“Miss Orene Barlow, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Barlow of Evergreen, has been selected the Good
Citizenship Girl for Conecuh County this year. The Good Citizenship Girl is
selected in each county and is then subject to winning the state title which is
decided as is the county by lot. The Daughters of the American Revolution
sponsor this fine civic project.”
“Miss Aubrey Jean Cowart won
first place in the American Legion sponsored oratorical contest at Evergreen
High School last Friday.”
“Dr. W.A. Taliaferro, a
native son of Conecuh County, delivered a very inspirational and entertaining
talk to the local Rotarians at their regular luncheon meeting Wednesday of this
week.”
“Local Bus Station Is Made
Regular Rest Stop: Announcement was made Tuesday that effective Wed., Feb. 4,
the local bus station would become a regular rest stop for all buses passing
through Evergreen. Passengers will be permitted to unload and buy sandwiches,
drinks, etc. Some of the buses will stop long enough for full meals.
“Since Jaxon’s was destroyed
by fire a little over a week ago, buses have had no regular rest stop. It is
hoped that the rest stop here will become a permanent arrangement. The local
bus station is operated by Mr. A.M. Lee.”

“Capt. Dave Lewis, Lt. Homer
Kindig and Lt. Jessie Jackson attended a meeting of the officers of the
National Guard in Montgomery Saturday night.”
“Elsewhere in this issue may
be found a condensed statement of the condition of the Bank of Evergreen at the
close of business Jan. 30, 1933. A study of this statement as compared to
former statements which have been appearing in this paper from time to time
shows that the institution is enjoying a substantial and steady growth.”
“The Evergreen Garden Club
announces that it has made arrangements to clean and beautify several vacant
lots in the business section of the city this spring. Work has already begun on
the lot just west of the post office on Rural Street, which is being cleared of
trash and debris. After being thoroughly cleaned off, flowers and shrubs will
be planted it is said.”
“The Conecuh Livestock
Association conducted the first cooperative hog sale for the year 1933 here at
its pens Tuesday. A total of 138 hogs weighing an aggregate of 25,965 pounds
were sold in the sale to A.B. Boutwell of Greenville for the sum of $542.51.
The hogs were shipped in two small cars.”
“Arrangements have been
completed for the great county-wide meeting to be held at the Baptist church in
Evergreen Thursday afternoon, Feb. 9, at 2:30 o’clock. Davis Cooper Jr.,
director of Sunday school and BYPU work for Alabama will be present.”

FEB. 7, 1918
“F. Brantley and J.F.B.
Lowrey of Burnt Corn were visitors here Monday.”
“Thos. Gordon and John
Rogers, stationed at New York, were arrested at this place (Evergreen) on the
charge of desertion a few days ago.”
“Clifton Johnson, popular
post office clerk, is ill with pneumonia.”
“Uncle Sam keeps shifting the
soldier boys around. Trainloads of them constantly passing through Evergreen,
going both north and south.”
“William L. Skinner died at
his home in Castleberry Friday of last week. He was one of Conecuh’s best known
citizens and his death will be generally regretted.”
“I will pay a liberal reward
for information to convict the thief who stole a part of a single wagon harness
from my barn. (Signed) C.P. Deming.”
“W.C. Dibbrell, representing
Rand, McNally & Co., school books and maps, is visiting the schools in this
section.”

new and neat quarters over The People’s Bank. Our friends are invited to call.”
“NORTH CASTLEBERRY: ‘All out
for North Castleberry’ will soon be the cry of the L&N conductors when
pulling into this new strawberry town, which has been located two miles of
Castleberry proper, when a tract of nearly 1,000 acres of land has been
purchased by a stock company with headquarters at Montgomery, for the
cultivation of strawberries and other fruit.”
“Delegates to the Good Roads
Convention: Probate Judge F.J. Dean has appointed the following delegates to
the Good Roads Convention to be held in Montgomery Feb. 22nd: O.R. Knight, T.B.
Williams, Jno. W. Brown, J.H. Kelley and H.J. Whitcomb.”
“Messrs. Irby Smith and Bro.
Have purchased the Frazier stable property and will soon convert it into a
commodious warehouse.”
