“Harris Johnston Williamson,
55, died Mon., March 8, in a Birmingham hospital after a long illness. He was
assistant postmaster of the Evergreen Post Office and a veteran postal
employee.
“A lifelong resident, Mr.
Williamson’s entire career was with the Evergreen Post Office. He served with
distinction in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Williamson began his
career in the postal service on Aug. 1, 1938.”
“BM-3 Don Hansen is on leave from
the ship John F. Kennedy and is spending the 10 days with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Oswald Hansen.”
“W.E. Williamson turns a
spade of earth for Belleville Baptist Church as interested observers look on at
the ground breaking of Conecuh Baptist Association Sunday afternoon, Moderator
Dr. Sam Granade stands by with his auxiliary shovel.”
“Larry Ryland of Atlanta, Ga.
visited Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Ryland during the weekend. He has just returned
from Houston where he attended a managers meeting for a week. While there, his
group from Atlanta won first prize at a masquerade party as ‘Southern
Gentlemen.’”
“Burglars hit Smith’s Gulf
for third time: If Troy Smith thinks he is being ‘picked on,’ you can hardly
blame him. Burglars broke into Smith’s Gulf Service during the night Saturday
and got away with ‘about $75.’ It was the third forced entry of the station in
four weeks time and his total loss is around $400.”

“State Lake Assured Here If
Suitable Site Can Be Obtained Soon: Bill Drinkard, head of the State of Alabama
Department of Conservation, assured Kiwanians Thursday night that the state
would be glad to construct a lake in Conecuh County.
“The Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs
of Evergreen are working jointly in an effort to have a large public lake
constructed in the county for recreational purposes.”
“A-3c Herston Perdue has
completed 20 weeks of Medical Specialist School at Great Lakes, Ill. He is now
stationed in the O.B. Ward at Whiteman Air Force Base at Sedalia, Mo. Herston
finished high school at Evergreen in 1955.”
“Repton-Burnt Corn Road Soon
To Be A Reality: Conecuh County will shortly begin work on the Repton to Burnt
Corn road, John Tranum, Chairman of the Conecuh County Board of Directors, said
today.
“The road will be built
through Bermuda, connecting both Repton and Burnt Corn with that community, as
well as providing a closer route from Burnt Corn to Evergreen. Much of the new
road will be along the route of the old Federal Stage Road.”
“Shown above is Miss Jo Ann
Salter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Salter of Castleberry, with her
Hereford calf, which she plans to enter in the Conecuh County Annual Fat Calf
Show, to be held in Evergreen on April 19.”

“Tornado Damages Homes Near
Brooklyn Friday: A tornado dipped into an area near Brooklyn last Friday night
and inflicted damage to two residences. It is reported that no one was injured.
“The homes said to have been
damaged were those of Mr. D. Cary and his son. Mr. Cary’s house was lifted from
its foundation and the one under construction by his son was damaged to some
extent.”
“Lewis Crook, 58, native of
Evergreen and one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Evergreen,
passed away here Tuesday morning following a brief illness.
“Mr. Crook played an active
part in the organization of the First National Bank in the year 1905, at which
time he was chosen cashier. He served in that capacity until the year 1915 when
he was made president. In 1920, he severed connection with the bank to enter
the lumber business with Mr. L.D. King, and remained in the field until his
death.”
“Friends of Mrs. S.P.
Shoemaker will be pleased to know that she has returned from Carter’s Hospital
in Repton where she has been for treatment.”

“CASTLEBERRY RT. 3: The flu
has been raging for a week or two, but most everybody has recovered, we are
glad to note.”
“Mrs. Neil Tolbert and J.A.
Tolbert were at the cemetery of Old Town building up and repairing graves
Wednesday morning.”
“Welcome is extended to Mr.
G.B. Pierce and family who have recently moved to Evergreen, having bought the
Crum place on Bruner Avenue, where Mr. J. Lamar Kelly recently resided. Mr.
Kelly and family have taken rooms with Mrs. Virginia B. Floyd on Magnolia
Avenue.”
“DR. W.B. CRUMPTON DIES IN
MONTGOMERY: As we lock our forms for the press, news reaches Evergreen of the
death of Dr. W.B. Crumpton, which sad event occurred at his home in Montgomery
Tuesday morning.
“Deceased was, probably, one
of the best known men in Alabama, prominent in the Baptist denomination for
many years, and was loved most by those who knew him best.”

“T. Henderson, who was
severely injured last week by a fall from the cars, is improving rapidly.”
“Several trainloads of
soldiers and their equipment passed through Evergreen Wednesday en route to
Texas, where they have been ordered to assemble.”
“J.C. Travis was thrown from
his carriage Monday afternoon by another carriage colliding with his. Mr.
Travis was considerably shaken up but not seriously injured.”
“County court was in session
here Monday, Judge Dean presiding. A large docket was disposed of.”
“Summer weather is with us
again. The thermometer registered 84 Tuesday.”
“Mr. J.S. Frazer, formerly of
this city, has received an appointment as Commissioner of Education for the
state. Mr. Frazer is well fitted for the position he has been honored with.”
“Jas. F. Jones is rebuilding
his office which was destroyed by fire some time ago.”
