“Dees will play with all stars: Alvin Dees of Evergreen High School has been named to the 26-man Southern Team for the Alabama High School All Star Football Game to be played on Aug. 5 in Denny Stadium at the University of Alabama.
“Dees was a standout tackle for the Evergreen Aggies for three years, playing all of his career under Coach John Law Robinson. An all around player, Dees excelled on defense backing the line much of the time and getting more than his share of tackles.
“The official brochure on the annual all-star games just issued by the Alabama High School Athletic Association says this of Dees: ‘Alvin Dees, Evergreen High School, is 18 years old, stands six feet tall. He weighs 185 pounds. He is the kick-off specialist for Evergreen. He was All-State, Post Herald, Associated Press; All-State in the 1963-64 seasons. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in 1963 and 1964. He is going to the University of Chattanooga to complete his education.’
“Dees is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dees of JayVilla.”

“These are the Pelicans of the American League of the Evergreen Junior Baseball League, managed by David McInvale. The players are Dale McInvale, Mike Johnson, Steve Hall, Pat Poole, Buddy Monroe, Ronald Johnson and Henry Dunnaway; Terry Pugh, Tommy Shehan, Gary McInvale, Gary Daw, Allen Covin, Gene Price and Lewis Price.”

“Sale defeats Watkins for local title: John Sale of Brewton downed Forrest Watkins of Monroeville in a playoff Thursday afternoon for the championship of the Evergreen Golf Club’s July 4th Invitational Tournament. Sale won the 18-hole playoff match with a fine one-under par effort.
“Sale and Watkins had tied over the regulation nine holes of the championship finals on July 5, and remained tied over five holes of a ‘sudden death’ playoff ended by darkness. They agreed at that time to an 18-hold playoff match on Thursday.
“Sale is one of the state’s finer young players and is the reigning state high school champion.”

“SPORTS REPORT – SR. LEAGUE” by John Lee Croft – “Indians Trounce Pirates: Indian Bubba Mininger threw a one-hitter at the Pirates in the opener Thursday night for a 7-2 victor. Mininger, Tommy Weaver and Hollis Tranum collected one hit each while Wayne Caylor went two-for-three to lead the Indians’ attack. Glenn Bolton had the Pirates sole hit. The losing pitcher was Ralph Deason.
“Tigers Edge Braves: The Tigers came on late to edge the Braves, 6-3, in the night cap. Herbert Ellis scattered five Brave hits in winning his first game this year. Donnie Brewton, Jerry Johnson and Ronnie Elliot each connected for two bingles. Wayne Hicks took the loss for the Braves, who fielded only seven men. Jud and George Stinson, Forrest Simpson, Jeb Barron and Eddie Ray Sasser posted one hit each.
“Tigers Trim Indians: The Tigers took sole possession of first place by downing the Indians, 2-0. Gary Faulkner, Tiger moundsman, gave up three hits while gathering in his sixth win. Bobby Jernigan, Donnie Brewton and Ronnie Elliott knocked two hits each to pace the Tigers. Bill Bailey took the loss for the second place Indians. Tommy Weaver’s triple, Bailey’s bunt and Thomas Riley’s single were the only hits in the Indians camp.”

“Paul Aces Clip Rockets Sunday By 8-3 Score: The Paul Aces whipped the Flat Rock Rockets, 8 to 3, Sunday behind the effective pitching of Bertie Hassel and Harold Godwin. The win was Paul’s eighth in a row and gives the Aces a season record of eight won and five lost.
“Hassel and Godwin limited the Rockets to seven hits. Paul could collect but eight off the throwing of Huston Barlow, but bunched them for as many runs.
“Joe McClain rapped out four hits in five trips to the plate to pace the Paul team to the win. Huston Barlow with two hits in four tries was the leading Flat Rock hitter. Godwin received credit for the win and Barlow was the losing pitcher.”

“Alabama Coaching Clinic Set For August 14-18: University of Alabama’s 18th annual coaching school and the third annual All-Star high school football game, two of the late summers biggest sporting events, are drawing nearer and plans are already being completed to insure that both will be the best ever. The coaching school will run from Aug. 14 to 18 with the All-Star game on Friday night, Aug. 18.
“The presence of Bud Wilkinson, Oklahoma’s brilliant young Sugar Bowl mentor, and Everett Case, basketball coach of North Carolina State’s perennially strong cage teams, on the coaching list along with the complete Alabama staff seems certain to attract a record attendance. During the past 17 seasons some 2,300 coaches have attended the Alabama School, which still remains one of the few free coaching clinics in existence.”

“Locals Lose Game To Andy Sunday: Andalusia took an easy game from the locals last Sunday. Throughout the game numerous errors were made and for some reason Hyde did not pitch the ball as usual, although he only had nine hits. His wild delivery and errors by Hansen, Barfield, Waters, B. Hanna made the game easy for their opponent.

“Second Inning: Barfield reached first by error of shortstop, Seabrooks walked, Hyde was hit by pitcher, loading the bases. Wilson fouled out to left fielder, Waters was put out by first basemen, Melton was put out by shortstop.
“Third Inning: Hansen struck out, Binion hit one base, stole second and scored when Bill Hanna hit out for a single. Barfield flied out to third baseman and Seabrooks was out at first when he hit the pill to second base who threw to first.
“Fourth Inning: Hyde popped up to third baseman, Wilson flied out to left field to be followed by fly to left field by Nobles.
“Fifth Inning: Melton popped out to second baseman, Hansen hit for a single, stole second, Binion flied out to third baseman, B. Hanna hit for a single and Hansen come in for a score. Barfield flied out to right field.
