Earl Windham reported .85 inches of rain on Sept. 1, .05 on Sept. 2, .15 on
Sept. 3, .85 on Sept. 4 and .03 on Sept. 5. He reported a high temperature of 92
degrees on Sept. 3 and a low of 67 on Sept. 2.
“Conecuh County’s new area
vocational school will open in September 1977, according to a tentative
schedule released by Superintendent of Education Wayne Pope. A site for the
school has been approved by the State Department of Education and will be
announced at a later date.”
“Evergreen voters return to
the polls Tuesday to complete the job they began in the first municipal
election on Aug. 10. Two places on the city council are involved in the runoff
election.
“In Place 2, Walter B. Hudson
Jr. and O.F. Frazier are in the runoff. Knud Nielsen, the incument, and Aubrey
Dean Padgett are involved in the runoff for Place 5.
“Voters elected Mayor O.B.
(Bert) Tuggle to a full term of office on Aug. 10. At the same time, they
elected the following men to the council: Pat Poole, Place 1; Alex Johnson,
Place 3; and Lomax Cassady, Place 4.”
“Jeff Jeffers, general
manager of LTP Southern, in Evergreen, has been named Vice President of Leisure
Time Products, it was announced today, by W.P. Marshall, President of the
Nappanee, Indiana based firm.”

“Fall court will open Monday
morning at the Conecuh County Courthouse under Judge A.H. Elliott. Circuit
Clerk Ralph Crysell said that 21 cases are on the civil docket.”
“Among the officers graduated,
Aug. 18, from the limited duty officer indoctrination division of the Naval
Officers Candidate School at Newport, R.I., was Navy Lt. (jg) William R.
Watkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus H. Watkins of Route 1, Evergreen.”
“The Third Annual South
Central Alabama Air Show will be presented at Middleton Field Oct. 1, it was
announced today by Lt. David E. McKenzie of the Evergreen Composite Squadron,
Civil Air Patrol.
“The show will be sponsored
by the Conecuh County Aero Club and the proceeds will go to the Civil Air
Patrol Squadron.
“The air show committee
consists of 2nd Lt. George D. McKenzie at chairman, Capt. Lee F. Smith as
co-chairman and 1st Lt. David E. McKenzie.”

“S.J. Wiggins Brings In First
Peanuts: The first peanuts of the 1946 season arrived in Evergreen Fri., Sept.
6. They were grown and marketed by S.J. Wiggins of near McKenzie. Miller
Trading Co. bought them. Wiggins said he had about 9,500 pounds of the Spanish
variety.”
“Bridge Construction To Close
Loree Road: Messrs. W.C. Simmons and A.E. Johnson, members of the Conecuh
County Board of Directors, announced this week that work toward the
construction of a bridge over Murder Creek on the Loree Road would begin about
Sept. 23. No detour will be built to handle traffic during the building of this
bridge, it was announced. Therefore, the road from the Ivey plantation west of
the Creek to Evergreen, will be closed. The public will reach Evergreen by way
of Lassiter Bridge north of the Loree Road, or by way of Belleville.”
“TO ALL WORLD WAR II
VETERANS: All veterans that have terminal leave coming to them may now file
their applications, at the Veteran Coordinator’s Office in the Courthouse, or
Veteran’s Affairs Office.
“It is requested that each
veteran bring with him a certified or photostatic copy of his discharge, except
Navy veterans, who were discharged after Sept. 15, 1944 and who were issued
Navpers 553, in which case photostatic copies of these will be accepted.”

“Evergreen Schools Open
Session Monday: The two schools of Evergreen opened Monday morning in a joint
program held at the City School auditorium beginning at nine o’clock.
“Work at the two schools
began in dead earnest Tuesday. At the City School, the enrollment is said to be
about 236 and at the Agricultural School it is 225, making a grand total of
461.”
“Conecuh High Opens 1931-32
Session Mon.: Castleberry, Ala., Sept. 8 – Conecuh County High School opened
Monday for its 18th session with a new principal – William English of Elba – in
charge. He succeeds Geo. M. Veazey, who had served during the past three years.
“The complete faculty, home
address, subjects taught and school attended, is as follows: Principal, Wm.
English, Elba, University of Alabama, mathematics and science; J.H. Dey Jr.,
Evergreen, Ala., University of Alabama, English; Miss Adele Tait, Coy, Woman’s
college, history; Miss Mary Lee Scales, Coker, Ala., University of Alabama,
home economics and French; W.A. Johnson, Evergreen, Ala., Troy State Teachers
College and Auburn, junior high school subjects and coach; Mrs. Sam Countryman,
Castleberry, music and expression.
“Prof. English becomes the
school’s seventh principal since its establishment in 1914. The principals, and
years served, are as follows: 1914-18, Sarah E. Luther; 1918-19, Lewey Dorman;
1919-22, Sellers Stough; 1922-26, J.B. Murphy; 1926-28, L.C. Kersh; 1928-31,
Geo. M. Veazey; 1931- William English.”

“Rev. Mr. Huckabee and family
of Pine Apple contemplate moving here (Repton) at an early date. Mr. Huckabee
has been elected principal of the public school.”
“John D. Platt, the blind
Confederate soldier, who for many years has been a familiar figure in this
county, died at his home near Gravella on Friday, the 6th inst.”

“Maj. S.N. Van Praag of
Pensacola, well known as the projector of the Pensacola & Northwestern
Railroad, died on Friday last from heart disease.”
