SEPT. 5, 1985

“The Sparta Academy Warriors routed Greenville Academy, 34-12, here last Thursday night at Stuart-McGehee Field in the season opening game for both teams.
“Chad Grace scored twice on one-yard runs, Danny Reed on runs of 11 and five yards and Mark Rigsby on a five-yard run. Rigsby had eight solo tackles, six assists, an interception and caused two fumbles.”
Other Sparta players in that game included Lee Adams, Scott Adams, Jeff Carrier, Todd Conway, Tommy Conway, Chris Cook, Chris Davis, Thad Ellis, Shannon Kendall, Michael Osban, Glynn Ralls, Lynn Ralls, Lynn Salter, Jeff Walker, Brad Watts, Lee Wild and Tom Wilson.

“The Lyeffion Yellow Jackets rolled easily to their first win of the 1985 season by defeating Alabama Christian in Montgomery, 60-0, Friday night.
“The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by Willie King, who rushed for 240 yards in eight carries and scored five touchdowns.”
Other Lyeffion players in that game included Willie Banks, David Beesley, Kenny Bledsoe, Michael Bledsoe, Sammy Booker, Terry Brown, Michael Burt, Willie Gill, Willie George, Derrick Grace, James Gross, Samuel Gross, Willie King, Sam Lyman,

“After a slow first half, the Evergreen Aggies came on strong in the second half to defeat Wilcox County High School by the score of 26-0.
“The Aggies ground game churned out 234 yards on 54 carries with Andrae McMillan getting 80 yards on 14 trys. Starting quarterback Travis Stallworth completed three out of eight passes for 50 yards and one interception and one touchdown.
“Defensively the Aggies were led by Victor Oliver, Howard Jones, Andrae McMillan and Roy Floyd.”
Other Evergreen players in that game included Steve Cunningham, Daryl Dryer, Willie Henry, Michael Johnson, Willie Rudolph.

“Coach Wendell Hart will unveil the 1970 Evergreen High Aggies tonight at eight o’clock in the traditional season opening game with Atmore here in Brooks Stadium. An overflow crowd is anticipated for the renewal of this long-standing rivalry.
“Probable starters on offense are wide end, LeGrant Hurd, 150, or Gary Daw, 145; left tackle, Robert Ward, 160; left guard, Whalen Oliver, 145; center, Tim Skipper, 190; right guard, Reggie Smith, 170; right tackle, James Meeks, 160; tight end, Richard Wilson, 165; quarterback, John Robinson, 155; tailback, Larry Peacock, 178; fullback, Eddie Reeves, 160; and wingback, Andrew McMillan, 200, or Frank McMillan, 160.
“The defense will probably line up with Ward and Wilson at the ends; Oliver, Sammy Brown, 185, or John Skipper, 170, at the tackles; Meeks at middleguard; Peacock, Smith and T. Skipper at linebackers; and Andrew and Frank McMillan and Hurd at deep backs.”
Other players on that year’s team included Jim Andrews, John Andrews, Randy Coker, Robert Johnson, Ronald Jones, Alvin Lee, Don Owens, Travis Sims, David Thomas and Larry Tranum. Assistant coaches included Mike Bledsoe and Dero Wise.

SEPT. 1, 1955

“McKenzie Stops Paul Sunday Afternoon, 9-3: McKenzie outscored Paul last Sunday by a score of 9 to 3. Each team used three pitchers before the contest was over. Gid Lee led the batting attack for McKenzie and Rogers led the Paul batters, hitting a home run in the ninth inning with two men on for three runs.”

“Those attending the football game in Mobile Wednesday were Frank Chavers, Larry Brantley, Charlie Brock, Charles Waters and Douglas Jones.”

“Wrestling Match – Sat., Sept. 10 at Memorial Gym – 8 p.m. – TWO MATCHES, ONE FALL, 30-Minute Tim Limit and MAIN EVENT – TAG TEAM, 3 Falls, One Hour Time Limit – Sponsored by the KIWANIS CLUB, Benefit Underprivileged Children.”

SEPT. 5, 1940

“Local Rotary Club Wallops Brewton Club 19-9 Thurs.: The Evergreen Rotarians walloped the Brewton Rotary Club Thursday night in a softball game by the score of 19-9. The game, played in Brewton’s back yard, featured six home runs and outstanding defense work afield.
“Kendall and Stewart lead the Evergreen offense by displaying powerful stickwork at the plate, Kendall clouting two circuit blows and Stewart one. Porter homered once in the eighth. The Evergreen fielders made several beautiful catches that saved the day for the locals. Rube Millsap allowed the Brewton club 10 safeties in winning the one-sided tilt. His mates collected 19 hits off Wilson, Brewton hurler.
“Cooper and Lazareth homered for Brewton and shoved their club into the lead in the fifth frame but the Evergreen batsmen solved the slants of Wilson and soon pulled away from their opposition.”

“MEN! HERE’S THE BEST WAY TO KEEP IN TRIM! You men, who aren’t used to strenuous exercise, will find that playing pool is the ideal sport for that trim look and well feeling. Play Pool regularly… it’s real fun! PASTIME BILLIARD PARLOR.”

“Hunting Regulations Announced By Conservation Director: Regulations governing the hunting of domestic game birds and animals for the 1940-41 season, embodying few changes from last year, were announced this week by Dr. Walter B. Jones, conservation director. Squirrel, deer, rabbit and quail seasons and bag limits remain unchanged.

“The open season on wild turkeys was reduced by 15 days, removing 10 days from the fall season and five days from the spring season. Turkey hunting this year will be from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31, and from March 20 to April 15, inclusive with the bag limit at one a day and five a season.”
