21, 1967
“Elliott (Buck) Quarles was
named Outstanding Player of the Week by the Evergreen Jaycees for the
Monroeville game.
“Quarles is a 160-pound
junior and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Quarles. He was a starter last year
and has developed as the Aggies’ top runner this season. He was chosen not only
for his blocking and running on offense, but also for his fine play on defense
as a linebacker.”
Evergreen dropped its game
against Monroe County High School, 14-13, in Evergreen.
Quarles scored Evergreen’s
touchdown on a three-yard run, but a bad snap caused the Aggies to miss the
ensuing extra point try. Evergreen’s second touchdown came on a 7-yard pass
from Jimmy Hart to Don Montgomery. Wayne Caylor kicked the extra point.
Other Evergreen players in
that game included Ronald Halford, Leon Hinson, George Stinson and Hollis
Tranum.
“The finest crowd in years filled the stadium to overflowing. Due
to a lost report form, Principal Roy Davis could give no official attendance
figures. However, he reported a gate o $2,163, including better than 2,000 paid
admissions.”
“Bulldogs whip Lyeffion 18-0:
Outplayed in the first half by an underdog Lyeffion team, the Repton Bulldogs
roared back with three touchdowns in the last half to win going away, 18-0.
“(Gary) Boatwright and Salter
were standouts for Repton.”
Other standout players in
that game included Repton’s Jimmy Ray Higdon and John Lee and Lyeffion’s Vernon
Chavers and Doug Williams.

“The Repton High School
Bulldogs ripped the cover off the 1952 season Friday night and also played the
first game on their new lighted field before an overflowing crowd. The grid
opener for Coach Charlie Pouncey’s team was spoiled by the visiting Flomaton
Hurricane team which edged the battling Bulldogs, 13 to 0, in a thrilling
scrap.
“The Repton club was led by
Shelton Baggett who played a bangup game on offense in the backfield and
shifted into a guard spot to spark the defense.”
“Coach Wendell Hart will take
the wraps off his seventh edition of the Evergreen High School Aggies here
Friday night when the Evergreens meet Atmore’s Blue Devils in the season-opener
for both clubs. Kickoff is set at eight o’clock in Brooks Stadium.
“Coach Hart listed his
probable starters on the offensive team as follows: Left end, Cullen Edson,
135; left tackle, Wayne Douglas, 180; left guard, Bill Robinson, 140; center,
Joe Stowers, 150; right guard, Richard Taylor, 160; right tackle, Sammy
Robison, 160, or Paul Hanks, 175; right end, Alt. Capt. Shirley Frazier, 160;
quarterback, Billy Lewis, 150; left halfback, Ward Alexander, 178; right
halfback, Jimmy Frazier, 145; fullback, Capt. Pace Bozeman, 160.
“The defensive platoon is
composed of the following: LE, S. Frazier, 160; LT, Hanks, 175; LG, Lamar
Shefield, 190; center, J. Frazier, 145; RG, Taylor, 160; RT, Douglas, 180; RE,
Levon Ward, 160; FB, Ronnie Edson, 155, HB, Bozeman, 160; HB, Lewis, 150;
safety, Alexander, 178.”
“Starlington Cops Conecuh
Loop Title In Playoff Sunday: The Starlington Stars defeated the Centerville
Rookies, 7-0, behind the two-hit pitching of Punk Fussell to win the playoffs
of the Conecuh Amateur League at Brooks Stadium Sunday. In a preliminary tilt,
Shreve edged Castleberry, 5-4, to take third place in the playoffs.
“The Stars scored twice in
the first inning and were never in trouble with Fussell pitching airtight ball.
The game was called at the end of the fifth inning because of darkness.
“Fussell struck out seven
batters and didn’t issue a free ticket to first. Houston Blackburn did the
catching. Gillis Jones started for the Rookies, giving way to Homer Riley in
the third inning. Clint Ward was the catcher. Jones gave up four hits, struck
out three and walked three. Riley gave up three hits, struck out six and walked
two.
“Ervin Burkett collected two
hits in three trips to the plate to lead the victors. Riley and Jones got the
two Rookie hits. Most of the game was played in a slow drizzle.
“Castleberry and Shreve tied
up in a real thriller in the first game. At the end of the scheduled seven
innings, the score was tied, 0-0. Shreve pitcher Herbert Sanford had a
no-hitter until he gave up one hit in the sixth. At the end of seven innings,
Shreve had gotten only three hits off Castleberry pitchers Ralph Grady and J.W.
Windham.
“Sanford, Duck Reeves and Ed
Hooks were the Shreve battery, while Grady, Windham and W. Ivey worked for
Castleberry. O’Neal Kennedy and Tot Bentley each had two hits in five trips to
lead the hitting for Shreve. Carroll Powell and Windham with one hit each led
Castleberry.”

“A crowd of scenery seekers
went to Stephens’ pond Sunday morning where they enjoyed boat riding and
several members of the party took a dip.”
“Football practice is going
on in dead earnest now on the campus of the Marion County High School in Guin.
The boys can be seen every afternoon going through heavy drills.”
“We (Wild Brothers Hardware)
are often told that we carry too much stock for the size town, but our
experience is that we hardly have any trouble trading if we have just what the
people want. This has been clearly demonstrated in our fishing tackle
department. We do not suppose there is a more particular customer ever comes in
our store than a real fisherman, still we hardly have one to come in and go out
without what he came in for. We just carry enough stock to give them what they
want, regardless of any peculiar idea that they may have. What it takes to
catch fish, we happen to have it.”
