Pieces” by Robert Bozeman III – “Auburn took care of business Saturday night
when they convincingly defeated Ole Miss, 51 to 31. They worried me to start
off by letting the Rebel Black Bears (their new mascot) hang around, but they
put them away eventually and are doing what they need to do to stay in the
national spotlight.
“Alabama has a full plate
this week when they travel to Baton Rouge to play LSU. I think they can handle
the Tigers, but I guarantee you it will be a physical contest. I hope
everything stays right and Alabama and Auburn meet Nov. 26 to have a
‘quarterfinal’ national championship playoff game.
“I think everybody will
understand then just how seriously football is taken in the Heart of Dixie. I
heard somebody on the radio the other day say that when a child is born in
Alabama they are given a transfusion, either orange and blue or crimson and
white. You know, they just might be right because it can get just that serious
sometimes.”
The Conecuh County Board of
Education “approved changes to the system’s coaching supplement policy, which
was compiled by Hillcrest High School Athletic Director Larry Boykin. The
supplements amount to about $2,000 less than last year, Brogden said.”

“Kanesche Nevlous was named Miss Football 1995 last
Friday night at Hillcrest High School’s Homecoming Festivities. She was
escorted by Damian Fantroy. She is the daughter of Bennie and Cecelia Nevlous.”
“The Sparta Academy Warriors closed out their 1995
regular season with a 19 to 14 loss to the Coosa Valley Rebels. The Warriors
will play Patrician Academy in the first round of the state playoffs this
Friday night at Patrician.
“Michael Pate led the Warriors in rushing with 99 yards
on 20 carries. He also had one touchdown. Mike McIntyre had 59 yards on 12
carries with one touchdown. Brent Worrell had 28 yards on six carries, and Rod
McIntyre had 21 yards on six carries.
“Rod McIntyre completed two of seven pass attempts for
eight yards with one interception. Michael Pate had one of the receptions for
six yards, and Brent Worrell had the other catch for two yards.
“Michael Pate scored the Warriors’ first touchdown on a
two-yard run, and Steve Bradley added the point after. Mike McIntyre scored on
a 29-yard run, and Bradley added the Warriors final points of the night.”
“Jamelle Williams was named the Defensive Player of the
Week, and Roger Rudolph was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the
Hillcrest High School Jaguars. Williams had six solo tackles and four assists
to lead the Jags in tackling. Rudolph rushed for 101 yards on 16 carries and
scored three touchdowns for the Jags. Rudolph also added a two-point conversion
after one of his touchdowns. The Jags defeated the Charles Henderson Trojans to
finish 4-0 to clinch the area title. The Jags will travel to Elba Friday night
to finish the regular season.”

Miss Football 1980 during homecoming festivities at Sparta Academy on Friday.
Headmaster Jack Miller crowns Jeena who is escorted by Scott Baggett, Mr.
Football.”
“The Lyeffion High School
Yellow Jackets came from behind Saturday night to defeat J.U. Blacksher of
Uriah, 14-6, at Mabry Covin Field to make it a truly happy homecoming for
alumni and friends.”
“(Donald) Lee was the leading
Jacket rusher with 83 yards. The Taylor brothers, Freddie and Ardell, led the
Jacket defense with four solo tackles and six assists each, and Freddie also
had a fumble recovery.”
Other standout Lyeffion
players in that game included Richard Benson, Bobby Blount, Mack Daily, Rickey
Gill, Mike Grace, Howard Johnson, Jerry Lymon, Floyd McNeil, Garnet Mims, Jesse
Mixon, Roosevelt Mixon, Robert Riley and Tim Searcy.
“Friday night, the Sparta
Academy Warriors lost once again by the margin of one extra point, but it was
especially bitter this time. Sparta was observing homecoming and South Butler
Academy’s 13-12 win ‘sorta rained on the parade.’
“Andy Hammonds scored both of
the Warriors’ touchdowns against the Raiders, the first on a four-yard run and
the second on a 23-yard pass from Jeff Johnson.”

“Jimmy Davis and Johnny
Sellers combined for Red Level to hand Evergreen its seventh straight loss of the
season with a 19-6 score.
“Bubba Faulkner, Aggie safety
and signal caller, picked off a Red Level pass to put Evergreen in business on
their own 47-yard stripe. Faulkner tossed to John Brown, Evergreen’s speed
merchant to set up a score. On fourth and one for a first down and three for a
TD, Faulkner flipped a jump pass to Jack White for a touchdown.”
“Lyeffion High’s streaking
Yellow Jackets raced past Coffeeville High, 39 to 0, Friday night to completely
spoil the Clarke County school’s homecoming.
“Quarterback Homer Chavers
found the end zone four times to pace the Jacket scoring. He went in twice from
close in and scored on longer runs of 25 and 15 yards.
Other outstanding Lyeffion
players in that game included Laymon Booker, Ronnie Booker, Harold Brown, Don
Jones, Bo O’Gwyn, Don Salter, Jerry New, Stanley Wilson.
“The Repton Bulldogs made
their homecoming crowd happy Friday night when they won a victory of 21 to 0
over Dozier.”
“Halfback Terry Andrews made
the first touchdown for the Bulldogs in the second quarter. Halfback Larry
Baggett made the PAT.
“Ralph Baggett playing
quarterback made the second touchdown for the Bulldogs in the second quarter.
Wingback Frank Watson mad the PAT.
“Quarterback Nickey Thompson,
who had not seen any action for several weeks because of injuries, scored in
the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs. Barry Blackwell, playing quarterback, made
the PAT.”

“Lyeffion’s Last Home Game
Here Next Thursday Night: Lyeffion High’s Yellow Jackets will play their last
home game here next Thursday night in Brooks Stadium. The Jackets have compiled
a fine record this year for a team playing its second year of football.
Lyeffion has defeated Beatrice and Repton and lost to Excel, Uriah, Coffeeville
and Grove Hill (B).
“The Jackets have played good
ball in every game except the Excel affair. Next Thursday they go against
McKenzie in a game that is rated a toss up and will probably play their best
game of the year as they go all out for a win. Kickoff will be at 7:30.”
“Aggies Stage Whirlwind
Finish To Bounce Bay Minette Tigers 24-14: ‘Greater courage hath no team than
to come from behind and win.’
“The Evergreen High Aggies
staged a whirlwind finish that had spectators standing on their heads here last
Friday night as they came from behind with two touchdowns in the final four
minutes and bounced Bay Minette’s Tigers, 24 to 14. The win was Evergreen’s
fifth in six starts this season and provided more thrills than any game ever
played in Brooks Stadium.”
Standout Evergreen players in
that game included Sam Cope, Shelton Craig, Gwyn Daniels, Ed Hooks, Capt. Jeff
Moorer, Gillis Morgan, C.A. “Jackie” Robinson, Bobby “Pistol Pete” Wells and
Franklin Williamson.
