FEB. 10, 2000

Weather reporter Harry Ellis reported 4.42 inches of rain during the month of January 2000. He also reported a high of 63 degrees on Feb. 3 and lows of 24 degrees on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6.

“The Bank of Evergreen is pleased to announce that Timothy P. Dantz has joined their staff as Executive Vice President. Tim is a 1989 graduate of the University of Virginia and brings 10 years of lending experience to the Bank.
“He and his wife, Katherine, will be moving to their home on Main Street in March.”

“Father charged with murder in shooting of son: Paul Deason, 52, of Evergreen was arrested for the murder of his son, Scott Deason, last Thursday night. According to Investigator James Taylor of the Conecuh County Sheriff’s Office, officers entered the residence of Paul Deason and found Scott Deason with a gunshot wound to the stomach area. He was transported to Evergreen Medical Center, where he was treated and prepared to be transferred to D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton, where he died during emergency surgery.”

FEB. 14, 1985

Weather reporter Earl Windham reported 0.4 inches of rain in Evergreen on Feb. 4, 2.25 inches on Feb. 5, and 0.11 inches on Feb. 6. He reported a high of 64 on Feb. 5 and a low of 23 on Feb. 8.

“Just OFF the Press! ‘Sparta, Alabama’ 1821-1866: A brief history of the once flourishing County Seat of Conecuh both prior to and during the Civil War as compiled and edited by Pat Poole. ‘Sparta author Pat Poole is shown with Conecuh Printing Co. owner, Harold Adams, examining the first copies of the historical book on the now vanished town. Copies of ‘Sparta’ are available at Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library, Evergreen Movie Rentals, Sleepy’s and from the Evergreen Kiwanis Club for $5 each.”

“Mildred Riggs Price, 67, of 102 South Main St., Evergreen, died Sun., Feb. 10, in a Brewton nursing home. She was a member of a prominent, pioneer family who enjoyed the esteem of all who knew her. She was a retired school teacher who taught for over 30 years in Conecuh County schools. Her late husband, Dr. Everette Price, was county coroner for over 40 years.”

“Deputy Sheriff Wes Booker Jr. has been named ‘Deputy of the Month’ for January in recognition of his outstanding performance of duties. During the month, a total of 272 papers were served by the department and Booker served 121 of these. Sheriff Edwin Booker commends Deputy Booker for the outstanding job that he is doing."

FEB. 12, 1970

“Sparta Academy elects directors, sets open meeting: The Board of Directors of Sparta Academy elected two new board members at a meeting Tuesday night, increasing the board of seven members. Walter Poole and Eugene Darby are the new members.
“Eldon Scott is president, and other board members are Sam Cope, Dr. Cecil Price, L.W. Price Jr. and John Greel Ralls.
“The directors all set the date of March 3 for an open meeting at seven o’clock p.m. at the Murphy Club. At that time, all interested parents in this area are invited to come and get information on the private school.”

“Sheriff James M. (Shorty) Brock made it official when he qualified Saturday for reelection.
“Brock is a veteran of World War II and has been in law enforcement since 1951.”

“Wm. Troy Smith, Evergreen businessman and former state trooper, qualified Saturday as a candidate for Sheriff. He filed his papers immediate after the Democratic Executive Committee met.
“Well known over the county, Smith was stationed here while serving with the Alabama Highway Patrol. He was a trooper for nine years and also on the Dothan City Police Force for two years. He left the troopers to enter business and operates Evergreen Gulf and Ambulance Service.”

FEB. 10, 1955

“Fred Edward Mills, age 65, well known and highly esteemed merchant and business leader of Evergreen, died unexpectedly at noon Thurs., Feb. 3, as a result of a heart attack. Mr. Mills died at his store (Mills Ready to Wear) as he was preparing to go to the weekly meeting of the Evergreen Rotary Club of which he was a member.”

“Wayne Thames is Alabama’s ‘Future Farmer of the Year.’ His selection has just been announced by T.L. Faulkner, executive secretary of the Alabama FFA. Wayne will receive the Turner E. Smith Educational Award of $300 and be presented with an engraved cup at the State FFA Convention in June.
“Young Thames is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam L. Thames, Rt. 2, Evergreen.
“Wayne, who is a member of the Lyeffion Chapter in Conecuh County, was selected on a basis of his leadership in FFA, school and community in addition to his outstanding farming program.”

“Boy Scouts of America Observe 45th Birthday, Evergreen Scouts 28th: The Boys Scouts of America, now 3-1/2 million strong, and the nation are celebrating Boy Scout Week, Feb. 6-13. The national organization is 45 years old, and the local troop is entering its 29th year, this week.
“The first troop in Evergreen was formed by Scout Master Paul McMillan in 1927, and has been in existence ever since.”

“The J.&W. Tractor Co., local dealer, will show the new Ferguson 35 Tractor in Evergreen on Fri. and Sat., Feb. 11-12, to be held at their place of business on North Court Square.”

FEB. 8, 1940

“Noted Lecturer Is Coming Next Week: Four million adults, three million high school students, and probably half a million college students have been inspired by the addresses of Dr. Charles E. Barker, lecturer and teacher of the principles of health and right living, in the quarter century he had devoted to his work.
“Dr. Barker is coming to Evergreen on Feb. 15 to address the high school students, Rotary Club and others under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Evergreen.”

“EVERGREEN YOUNG MAN INJURED IN ACCIDENT: E.B. Aycock, well known Evergreen young man, was seriously injured last Friday when he was pinned beneath the trunk of a falling tree while working near Brewton. Young Aycock was operating a skidder when the accident occurred and it was reported that the tree to which the machine was anchored broke in two and caught him in falling.
“He was carried to Atmore Hospital, where he is still confined with his condition reported as little improved. He suffered severe internal injuries, including fractures of the pelvis bones.”

“County Supt. H.D. Weathers has qualified with the committee as a candidate to succeed himself as County Superintendent of Education.”


“W.S. Dreaden, well known and popular Clerk of the Circuit Court, has announced his candidacy for reelection to that office in the forthcoming primary elections.”
