“Conecuh lands second plant: For the second time in less than a year, Conecuh County and the City of Evergreen have landed jobs for the citizens of Conecuh County. An announcement was released last Thursday that officials with W&B Trading Co., LLC have signed an agreement with the joint partnership of the county and city to build a biodiesel manufacturing facility near Castleberry.
“The more than $10 million facility will employ 24 people in the first year with pay ranging from $8 an hour to $70,000 a year. President Bobby Balagun said construction would begin in the next 30 to 45 days.”

“The 2006 Conecuh County Relay For Life was held Friday night at Middleton Field. The Conecuh County Department of Human Resources team raised $5,092.48 to win first place in the non-corporate division.”

“The Evergreen Baptist Church Relay For Life Team raised the most money at the 2006 Conecuh County Relay For Life held Friday night at Middleton Field. This year’s event raised $65,641.83 and the Evergreen Baptist Church team raised $12,356.03. Brenda McIntyre, a member of the team, was recognized as the individual who raised the most money for Relay 2006. Relay Chairman Inez Booker expressed her appreciation to the sponsors, teams and everyone who was involved in making Relay 2006 so successful.”

Evergreen weather reporter Harry Ellis reported .25 inches of rain on June 16. He also reported a high of 90 degrees on June 14 and June 15 and a low of 63 on June 10.

“Eight people were injured in a two-vehicle accident which occurred Saturday afternoon on County Road 29, approximately three miles from Evergreen.”

“Miss Lizbeth McMillan, a much loved and respected citizen of Evergreen, passed away last Saturday, June 15. She was a resident at Evergreen Nursing Home during the past few years. Graveside services were held at Bethel Cemetery in Bullock County.
“’Miss Lib’ retired as a school teacher in 1969 after 46 years of service. Forty-three of her years as a teacher were spent at the Evergreen City School, where she taught the fifth grade from the same classroom. She came to the Conecuh County School System in 1926 when her brother, the late W.P. (Paul) McMillan, was named principal of the city school.
“She received a two-year teaching degree from Troy Normal School in 1923. When the State of Alabama required that teachers have a four-year degree, she continued her education at the University of Alabama, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1933. In 1960, she took additional classes at Auburn University.”

“On June 9, 1991 Mrs. Susan Harper of 226 Elizabeth St., Evergreen, celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at her residence. Evergreen Mayor Lee Smith is shown presenting Mrs. Harper with a Key to the City during her birthday celebration.”

JUNE 17, 1976

“Horace Alto Deer, age 77, died suddenly in Conecuh County Hospital June 12. Mr. Deer was born in the Old Town community and lived most of his life in Conecuh County.
“Being a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, he had served as its secretary for many years. In 1974 the Kiwanis Club presented him a service plaque for his 25 years as a faithful Kiwanian.
“For 19 years he had served as secretary of the Greening Lodge No. 53 and also had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
“Mr. Deer owned a local grocery store for many years and then in 1942 he became a mail carrier on Rt. D. He delivered the mail until his death.”

“Castleberry library to have story hour: The Castleberry Public Library will have a Story Hour for youngsters ages 4-12 beginning Sat., June 19, and ending Sat., Aug. 28.”

“This rubble is all that remains of the tractor-trailer driven by Carey Thigpen, a driver for Freiler Industries, Inc. of Amite, La. The accident occurred about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on I-65 when this vehicle struck a parked vehicle owned by Deaton, Inc. of Montgomery. Thigpen is in a Mobile hospital.”

“Conecuh County Deputy Leroy Ferrell destroyed approximately 30 marijuana plants that were found growing off the Brooklyn Road. The plants were destroyed by a chemical.”

JUNE 15, 1961

“Tragedy struck on the farm of Dennis Gross Friday afternoon. Gross, age 55, and 24-year-old Joe Nathan Betts both drowned in a pond back of the Gross home while three children watched in horror.
“Sheriff James Brock said the men were wading out in the water when Betts, unable to swim, stepped off in water over his head. They both drowned when Gross tried to rescue him.
“The Dennis Gross farm is located on the old Evergreen-Castleberry Road about a mile south of P.J. Godwin’s.”

“The first cotton bloom of 1961 was brought in to The Courant on Monday morning. Claiming the honor was Leslie Crosby, good farmer of Rt. E, Evergreen.”

“The Evergreen Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, joined other squadrons from Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas Wings June 7 in a search for a Piper Commanche airplane believed missing somewhere in the coastal area with a doctor and one passenger from Tampa, Fla. aboard.
“Base of operations for the mission was located at St. Elmo, 25 miles southwest of Mobile. All results of the search were still negative Tuesday.”

“Three Veteran Teachers End Long Careers: Three of Conecuh County’s teachers announced this week that the closing of the past school term marks the end of their teaching careers. They are Mrs. Frances Shaver of Evergreen High School, Mrs. Eleaner Dean Holland of Brockton School and Mrs. Mary Bradley of Castleberry.”

JUNE 20, 1946

“Jeptha Perryman Tomlinson Dies At Ripe Old Age: After many months of declining health due to advanced age, Jeptha Perryman Tomlinson, age 85, prominent pioneer citizen of this county died at his plantation home a few miles north of Evergreen Fri., June 14, at 1 p.m.
“Mr. Tomlinson was born on the plantation where he died and had lived his entire life there. He was a descendant of some of the early settlers of this county, the Perryman and Tomlinson families. He was widely known, beloved and respected by a host of relative and friends.”

“Mr. Cunningham Wins Prize As Oldest Father: Mr. John Cunningham, Evergreen’s oldest citizen, was notified this week by the Montgomery Fair, Montgomery firm, that he had won the prize of $50 as the oldest father in a contest which the store sponsored prior to Father’s Day. Mr. Cunningham is 97 years of age, but still enjoys good health and takes and active interest in life.”
