on Aug. 5 and .15 on Aug. 6. He also reported a high of 88 degrees on Aug. 1
and a low of 67 on Aug. 4.
“Children in Conecuh County
were up bright and early Wednesday morning and headed to their first day of
school. These K-4 students at Evergreen Elementary School were learning the
ropes on their first day of school from their teacher, Susie Scanlon.”
“Sonny Brasfield, Assistant
Executive Director of the Alabama Association of County Commissions, gives
county officials from all over south Alabama information on the new Open
Meetings Law that will become effective Oct. 1, 2005 on Thursday at Reid State
Technical College. The new law was passed by the legislature earlier this year
after the ACCA and the Alabama Press Association ironed out compromises to
change the law for the first time in almost 100 years. The seminar was
sponsored by the ACCA so that county officials can be better informed on the
changes to the law before it takes effect.”
“For the fifth time in less
than two weeks, an Evergreen business was robbed at gunpoint. Last Wednesday,
Aug. 3, at approximately 3:34 p.m. the Evergreen Police Department was notified
by the Cash Express in the Village Plaza that they had been robbed by a lone
gunman.”

Ellis reported .12 inches of rain on Aug. 2 and .15 on Aug. 3. He also reported
highs of 94 degrees on July 30 and July 31 and a low of 68 on Aug. 2. Total
rainfall for the month of July 1990 was 5.20 inches.
“Tragedy struck twice in one
week in Conecuh County when a second pedestrian was struck and killed in
Evergreen.
“Mrs. Verba Oliver, 82, of
Evergreen died instantly when she was struck by a Ford pickup driven by Carl
Raines, 36, of Evergreen. The accident occurred in front of the A&P
Supermarket on Belleville Street during lunch Friday. Earlier that same week,
Mrs. Syntha Wagnor Norris of Castleberry was killed when she was struck by a
vehicle.”
“A late night fire at 103
South Main St. gutted the home of Randy Baggett.
“The blaze began early
Saturday morning sometime after midnight. The Evergreen Fire Department was
dispatched but the blaze had already done extensive damage by the time they
arrived.
“The cause of the fire has
yet to be determined but it is under investigation by State Fire Marshall Ken
Smith. The Baggetts were not home at the time the fire erupted.”
“Conecuh County public
schools will start for students on Mon., Aug. 27, according to Superintendent
Steve Coker. Buses will run at the usual time. Students who do not travel by
bus should report to their respective schools at 7:50 a.m.”

“Record rainfall is
possibility: There is a very good possibility that rainfall for 1975 will be at
an all time high. Earl Windham reports that the total rainfall was 76.4 inches
through Aug. 10. Normal annual rainfall in Conecuh is in the 55 to 60 inches of
rain.”
Windham, Evergreen’s local
weather reporter, reported 1.1 inches of rain on Aug. 5, 1.7 inches on Aug. 6,
.3 on Aug. 7 and .7 on Aug. 10. He reported highs of 90 degrees on Aug. 4 and
Aug. 9 and a low of 68 on Aug. 8.
“Tribute is paid late Dr.
Price: The late Dr. Cecil Eugene Price who died April 29, 1974 after practicing
medicine here for over a quarter of a century was honored at an impressive
memorial service Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Conecuh County Hospital. A
large crowd gathered to join in the tribute to the revered physician.
“Mayor Wm. Henry Sessions
welcomed those attending.
“Resolutions praising the
service of the late Dr. Price were presented to Mrs. Cecil Eugene Price as
follows: City of Evergreen by Mayor Sessions; Conecuh County by John M.
Fleming, Chairman of the County Commission; State of Alabama by State Rep.
James E. Warren.
“Attorney William D. Melton,
former State Rep. and Senator, delivered the eulogy. The Prayer of Dedication
was given by the Rev. O.B. Tuggle Jr. The dedication of a portrait of the late
Dr. Price was rendered by Melton.
“Mrs. Price unveiled the
portrait which will hang in the lobby of the Conecuh County Hospital.”

“Miss Mary Julia Ellis,
19-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ellis of Evergreen, is the 1960
Maid of Cotton for Conecuh County. The brunette beauty was chosen for the honor
at the annual meeting of the Conecuh County Farm Bureau held Saturday at the
City School.
“Gerry Seales was chosen as
alternate Maid of Cotton.
“Other contestants for the
Cotton Maid title were Gwen Henderson, Betty Jean Bower, Margaret McInnis,
Barbara Bewley and Willene Johnston.
“Mary Julia will represent
Conecuh County in the Alabama Maid of Coton Contest on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 at the
Alabama State Fair in Birmingham.”
“A six-year-old girl was
killed and five other persons injured in an accident near McKenzie Tuesday.
Among the injured was the brother of a local resident.
“Killed was Kathy Jane
Beasley, daughter of Mrs. Bobbie Fay Beasley, McKenzie. Mrs. Beasley and
another child, 15-month-old Paul, were both seriously injured.
“Dempsey Goodwin, Detroit,
Mich., was injured seriously, sustaining a number of cuts and his right arm was
broken in several places. Also in his car were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hanks of
Akron, Ohio, both of whom were hospitalized.
“Goodwin was on his way to
Evergreen to visit his brother, John Goodwin, when the two cars rammed together
on U.S. Highway 31 about two miles north of McKenzie.
“The accident was
investigated by Capt. A.G. Mitchell and Sgt. T.P. Melton of the Highway
Patrol."

“H.S. Hagood Gins First Bale
Today: The first bale of cotton of the 1945 season to be ginned here is being
ginned today for H.S. Hagood at the gin plant of Evergreen Mfg. Co.”
“Conecuh County Schools Will
Open Sept. Third: Announcement was made this week by County Superintendent of
Education Harvey G. Pate that all schools of Conecuh County would open Mon.,
Sept. 3. The teachers institute will be held on Sat., Sept. 1.
“Supt. Pate announced that
for the first few weeks short schedules would be observed in order that pupils
might assist in harvesting the cotton and peanut crops.”
“Aboard the USS Oakland:
James E. Raines, seaman, first class, USNR, son of Mrs. Cummie Raines, Rt. 1,
Evergreen, Ala., fought aboard this light cruiser when she helped sink a Jap
destroyer and a 7,500-ton transport and shoot down 12 Jap plans as highlights
of her combat career of 40 naval actions.”
“Mrs. W.M. Bateman and little
son, Billy Bob, left Tuesday for New Orleans, where they will go by plane to
the Panama Canal Zone to join her husband.”
“Jap City Dissolved By Atomic
Bomb: GUAM – Equal in destructive power to an attack by 2,000 B-29s normally
loaded with high explosive and incendiary bombs, the first single atomic bomb
dropped on Japan dissolved the city of Hiroshima in a vast cloud of dust.”
