While most of us caught glimpses of the events leading up to, and including, the 54th Presidential Inauguration, a local business had a backstage pass for the whole show.
Brent and Gerald Salter of Salter’s Evergreen Supply in Evergreen joined more than 100 florists and industry professionals selected by the Society of American Florists to prepare the inaugural floral decorations.
The volunteers worked some 5,000 hours in a warehouse in downtown Washington, D.C., during the inaugural week creating classic, sophisticated works of floral art for eight balls, three dinners and various other receptions.

J.M. “Jack” Davis, 58, of Castleberry died Fri., Jan. 19, 2001. Mr. Davis was a member of the Air Force Reserves and a Vietnam Veteran.

Special Education Coordinator for Conecuh County Schools, Harriet Hubbard, was awarded the Margaret Vann Award for Outstanding Special Education Coordinator in the State of Alabama on Jan. 18, 2001 in Birmingham during the Alabama Federation Council for Exceptional Children Super Conference 2001.
Since Hubbard’s employment with Conecuh County Schools in 1997, tremendous strides have been taken in the field of special education. Hubbard has written grants totaling over $70,000, which has enabled the county to purchase a new and much needed school bus for transporting multi-handicapped students.

JAN. 23, 1986

Local weather observer Earl Windham reported .67 inches of rain on Jan. 18. He also reported a high of 69 on Jan. 16 and a low of 24 on Jan. 14.

The Evergreen Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Promotion-Membership Banquet on Thursday night, Jan. 30, at seven o’clock at the Holiday Inn, it is announced today. Sheldon Morgan, well-known Mobile bank executive, will be the guest speaker, according to President Willene Whatley.
Mrs. Whatley will preside and will also report on 1985 activities and give the response and conclusion after the program. The invocation will be brought by Dr. Lamar Jackson. The report of the Nominating Committee will be given by Chairman Gerald Salter.
Judge of Probate Frank T. Salter will introduce the speaker, Sheldon Morgan, who is a native of Alabama. He is presently head of the marketing division of First Alabama Bank of Mobile.

Ralph Garrett was honored on Jan. 10 when he retired from South Central Bell after 38 years and nine months service. He was a toll technician at the time of his retirement.

William Thomas Lanier, 89, died Wed., Jan. 15, at his residence on Route One, McKenzie. “Mr. Will,” as he was familiarly known, was a member of a prominent, pioneer family and widely known and highly respected. His daughter, Mrs. Ruth Hester, is a published author and Courant columnist.

JAN. 28, 1971

Ice plant hit in Castleberry; two are charged: Two youths have been arrested and charged with burglary and grand larceny in a break-in at Deuel Ice Co. in Castleberry on Jan. 19. They were arrested Friday following an investigation conducted by Deputy Sheriffs Bill Kent, Horace Weaver and Marshall Jones and State Investigators Capt. A.G. Mitchell and R.C. (Pete) Taylor.

Sandra Owens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Owens, Evergreen, is a contestant in the Lurleen B. Wallace State Junior College’s first annual Beauty Pageant to be held on Feb. 6, 1971 at 7:30 p.m. in the Andalusia High School Auditorium.
Sandra, a freshman majoring in elementary education, was a popular student at Evergreen High School, where she was chosen class favorite; served as a majorette; and was selected to appear in the senior Superlatives in the annual. She was Miss Evergreen for 1970 and was selected to attend Girls State.

The Pinckney D. Bowles Chapter of U.D.C. met Tues., Jan. 19, in the home of Miss Elizabeth Riley with Mrs. Hunter Morgan co-hostess.
The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Ray Owens, the president. Miss Demoval Hagood gave the program on “The Virginia Lees.”

C.T. (Thad) Ivey, local Chevrolet dealer, outlined the importance of the United Fund to Conecuh County and the necessity of bringing the currently lagging fund drive to an early and successful conclusion when he addressed the Evergreen Kiwanis Club at their meeting Friday noon.

Old Landmark Toppled From Local Scene Tues.: A historic landmark, the old water standpipe of Standpipe Hill, was torn down Tuesday, and as The Courant went to press, was being cut up with torches, headed for the scrap pile.
The old reservoir was erected in 1900, and for years was a guide for people coming to Evergreen.
The new water tower was erected about four years ago.

U.S. Navy Will Use The Evergreen Airport Soon: The U.S. Naval Air Station in Pensacola will soon use the Evergreen Airport, Middleton Field, for an auxiliary field in training students, it was learned here this week.
Presumably, pilots and ground crews will be flown up each day, in an operation similar to that of Camp Rucker, when a large number of students and instructors flew to Evergreen for touch and go landings.

Peace Pilgrim, who has walked over 7,600 miles on her pilgrimage for peace, passed through Evergreen over the weekend on her way to Montgomery.
Peace Pilgrim began her 100-mile walk in Alabama at Castleberry, walking into Evergreen after dark. She spent the night at the bus station, The Rebel, and began her long trek about 7 a.m. the next morning.
Sunday afternoon about 3:30, she was seen a few miles above Georgiana, and several people reported having seen her Monday, the last in the afternoon, about two miles above the junction of the Ft. Deposit road and the new highway, at Priester’s.

Mr. Zack T. Jones, 72, died at his home in Brooklyn Saturday morning, Jan. 11. Deceased was a member of the Brooklyn Masonic Lodge and a lifelong resident of Conecuh.

Ratings In Battery “C” Announced: Camp Blanding, Fla. – Recent ratings of enlisted men in Battery C, 117th Field Artillery, who formerly were stationed as a unit of the Alabama National Guard at Evergreen, were announced this week by Captain William D. Lewis, battery commander.
The ratings are as follows: Sergeants, George H. Joyner; Corporals, Floyd H. Purnell, Robert Salter, Marvin Kindig, Elmer Morrison and James Tanner; Privates First Class, Herman Armstrong, Walter Bower, Walter Holland, Cecil Padgett, Olon Padgett, Winton McIntyre, Wesley Shefield, James Bryant, Lee Cole, Hagood Ellis, Bennie Gatlin, James Henderson, James Logan, Richard Potts, Rufus Burt and James Weaver.

Besides Captain Lewis, other commissioned officers in the unit are First Lt. John C. Holman and Second Lt. Leon A. Salter.
