Warriors beat Clarke Prep Gators 71-59: Sparta Academy swept all four games when the Clarke Prep Gators traveled to Evergreen on Fri., Jan. 19, 2001.
Warriors 71, Clarke Prep 59: John McKenzie led the scoring for the Warriors with 15 points. He was followed by Jimmy Hyde with 14 points, and Chris Garner and Rusty Salter with 12 points each; Derrick Williams with seven points; Kyle Johnston and Justin Tranum with five points each.
Lady Warriors 59, Clarke Prep 42: Katie Etheridge led the scoring for the Lady Warriors with 29 points. Rounding out the scoring were Jill Pate with eight points; Ashley Hammonds with seven points; Jessica Bennett with five points; Laura Wiggins and Ashton Garner with four points each; and Callie Ezell with two points.
JV Warriors 30, Clarke Prep 20. Lady JV Warriors 42, Clarke Prep 18.

Warriors defeat Escambia Cougars: The Sparta Warriors defeated the Escambia Academy Cougars in Canoe on Tues., Jan. 16, 2001.
Warriors 68, Escambia 59: John McKenzie led the scoring for the Warriors with 15 points. Also scoring in double digits were Kyle Johnston and Jimmy Hyde with 12 points each and Chris Garner with 11 points. Also putting points on the board were Rusty Salter with eight points; Justin Tranum with six points; Derrick Williams and Wiley Cobb with two points each.
Escambia 52, Lady Warriors 41: Katie Etheridge led the scoring for the Lady Warriors with 17 points.

Sparta sweeps Greenville 5’s: Sparta Academy made a clean sweep of the visiting Greenville Academy Tornados at the Sparta Gymnasium on Jan. 16 as the varsity boys and girls and the junior girls all took victories.
The Warriors boys won, 69-63, behind the 22-point performance of Scott Salter. Brandon Salter chipped in 13 points; Brian Bybee, 10; Danny Reed, eight; Mark Rigsby, six; Bradd Watts, four; and Jason West, Lynn Ralls and Thad Ellis, two each, according to Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
The Lady Warriors blasted Greenville, 82-29, with four players in double digits: Kim Searcy, 22 points; Tracy Holmes, 15; Susan Ward, 11; and Carol Kendrick, 10. Leah Carrier, Julie Johnson and Jeannie Vondereau had six points each, and Baby Girl Floyd, Stacey Holmes and Shawn Hammonds, two each.

Richard Parker Ivey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Ivey of Scottsboro, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Nall of Lenox, killed this 38-pound bobcat on Christmas Eve at the Nall’s farm near Lenox.

Barry Stuart killed this fine eight-point buck recently. The deer weighed 210 pounds, which is huge for this area, and had a 20-1/2 inch antler spread, measuring 133.5 on the Boone-Crockett Scale.

JAN. 28, 1971

Rattlesnake Rodeo gets underway Saturday morning: There will be a grand prize of $100 for the largest rattlesnake turned in during a Rattlesnake Rodeo which begins Saturday under sponsorship of the Escambia-Conecuh Wildlife Association. The contest ends on Feb. 6.
Contestants are required to register in advance, $1 fee, at Flo Drilling & Pump Co. in Brewton. Area of the rodeo is limited to Escambia and Conecuh counties. Snakes must be turned in by 3 p.m., Feb. 6, at Flo Drilling & Pump Co.

JAN. 26, 1956

Evergreen High Aggies Busy, Winning Three Since Friday; McGill, Repton, T.R. Miller Fall: Coach Wendell Hart’s Evergreen Aggies have been extremely busy since Friday night, winning three ball games in a row, over McGill of Mobile, Repton High and T.R. Miller.
Proving that lightning can strike twice, even against the nemesis McGill, the Aggies took an easy win over the McGill Yellow Jackets here Friday night, 63-44. Randy White increased his average, scoring a total of 32 points against the hapless Mobilians.
Following White in the scoring column were: Kelly, nine; King and Pugh, seven each; Boykin, four; and Carrier and Joyner, two each.
Tuesday night, the Aggies met the Repton Bulldogs here, and proved too much for the visitors from the western part of the county.
Randy White was again high man for the evening, with 23 points, followed in the scoring column by Robert King with 11 points, Wayne Frazier with six; Kelly, Tolbert and Joyner, four each; Boykin and Pugh, two each; and Edson, one point.
Ray Blackwell led the scoring for Repton with 14 points. Terry Nall hit for eight while William Ashcraft got four and Gerald Owens got three.
Three Aggies broke into the two figure column, and everyone that played scored at least once as Evergreen trounced T.R. Miller, 90-43.
Randy White continued to hit well, as he scored 33 points. Eddie Kelly hit better than he has for some time, racking up 21 points, while Robert King got 12. Wayne Frazier hit for seven; Ronnie Edson, six; Mickey Joyner, four; Wendell Tolbert, three; and Pugh and Boykin got two each.

Lyeffion High School Bows To Excel Tuesday: The Excel Panthers were too much for Lyeffion Tuesday night as Excel won, 45-38, in a close ball game.
Gabe “Tiger” Booker, the mighty mite, shared scoring honors with Robert Dees, who also hit for 10. Clarence Riley added nine points for the Yellow Jackets. Matchett with 20 and Stacey with 16 were high for Excel.

The Evergreen Aggies make their first official appearance in South Alabama Conference competition tonight as they tackle Luverne at Elba. The Aggies play in the first game of the SAC Tournament, at Elba, facing Luverne at six o’clock.
The only other game on tap in the first round of play is Enterprise vs. Greenville, to be played at 7:15 tonight. Georgiana and Florala, who drew first round byes, meet in the first game of the quarterfinals later that night, at about 8:30 p.m.

75 YEARS AGO
JAN. 23, 1941

Evergreen High School: The Aggies went to McKenzie Friday night. The game ended with Evergreen on the short end of a 27-18 score. The Aggies will go to Monroeville Friday night, Jan. 24. The big game for the Aggies will be with Lyeffion. This will be at Lyeffion on the night of Jan. 28.
The “E” Club sponsored a dance at our school, following their game with McKenzie. Everyone enjoyed it and look forward to the next dance. The “E” Club members also have ordered sweaters. These will be green with white letters and service stripes. The club members are looking forward to the time when they will initiate new members. The qualifications to become a member of this club are 21 quarters in basketball.

The boys and girls of Fyffe, Ala. will soon be building sturdy bodies in the gymnasium that NYA workers are building for them on the school grounds. Forty-three NYA boys are busy on this job. These boys have already built a three classroom edition.

BOY SCOUT NEWS: Boy Scouts of Troop 40 met Monday night for the regular weekly meeting. Boys especially enjoyed playing games, and contests were held between the patrols.
