CCHS Blue Devils bounce
Beatrice; Lyeffion loses: Living up to their No. 1 billing, the Blue Devils of
Conecuh County High at Castleberry bowled over the Beatrice Eagles, 89-53,
Tuesday night in the opening round of the Area Class A Basketball Tournament. The
meet is being held in the Monroe County Coliseum in Monroeville.
Coach Wayne Pope’s club
jumped out to a huge lead in the opening minutes and played the reserves most
of the way after the first period. Ten Blue Devils got in on the scoring with
Ronald Reeves bucketing 20; Gary Oliver, 15; Rodney Wilson, 14; and Donald
Janes, 13, to set the pace. Brown tossed in 23 and Booker 11 for Beatrice.
In the opening game, a
cold-shooting Lyeffion Yellow Jacket team was edged, 43-40, by Fruitdale,
second seed in the meet. Coach Joe Mason’s club got the shots, but couldn’t get
them home. Booker hit 19 and Wilson 12 in the losing effort. Baxter got 13 and
Williams 12 for Fruitdale.
Wednesday night Repton High
Bulldogs swung into action playing Excel at 8:30. In the other game at 7,
Frisco City met Coffeeville. Thursday night, the Repton-Excel winner meet
Castleberry and the survivor of the other tilt plays Fruitdale. The finals will
be Friday night and the winner then goes to Thomaston on Saturday night for the
Area finals with the winner going to Tuscaloosa next week for the state
tournament.
Evergreen High’s Aggies will
be in action in the Monroeville Coliseum next week in the AA Meet, playing
Georgiana in their first game.

FEB. 22, 1951
Coach M.C. Thomasson’s
fast-breaking Conecuh County High Blue Devils copped the Conecuh County
Basketball Tournament crown last Saturday night with a 41-31 win over Repton’s
Bulldogs in the finals… in Repton’s fine gym Friday and Saturday.
Castleberry advanced into the
finals on a forfeit by Evergreen. The Evergreen team was not able to compete in
the county meet because a previously scheduled game with Greenville could not
be played on another date. The Blue Devils added the clincher Monday of this
week, however, when they whipped the Aggies, 52-41. Repton edged Lyeffion to
enter the final round.
Two Williams, Bradley and
Reaves, proved to be “Sweet Williams” for Castleberry as they pace the Blue
Devils to their win in the championship tilt.
Bradley dropped 16 points to
lead the scorers. Reaves was just behind with 13 markers. L.D. Hart totaled
five; W.J. Reed, three; and Ralph Graddy and Raphael Palmer, two each for
Castleberry.
Burt and McMillan were best
for Coach Charles Pouncey’s Repton quint. Burt dropped 12 points and McMillan
10. Carter and Giles had three each, and Daniels, Kelly and Thompson, one each.
Evergreen High School will be
host to the First District AA Basketball Tournament next Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, March 1-3. The meet will be played in Evergreen High’s beautiful
Memorial Gymnasium with 14 teams scheduled to vie for the district crown.
McGill Institute of Mobile, runner-up to Ensley in the state tournament last
year, is the defending champion.

FEB. 27, 1936
Nichburg suffered a double
defeat Saturday at the hands of Coach Davies’ Lime Hill squads, the girls lost,
21-2, while the boys were losing an overtime contest, 9-5.

FEB. 23, 1921
The annual meeting of the
stockholders of the Country Club was held on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 19. Officers
elected for ensuing year: J.S. Stearns, President; C.R. Taliaferro,
Secretary-Treasurer; Board of Directors, W.H. Wild, L.T. Rutland, E.L.
Stallworth, J.C. Cheney and E.J. McCreary. Resolutions were passed restricting
fishing in the club pond and streams on property owned by it.
