Mrs. Julie Salter bagged this
fine gobbler over the weekend. The wild turkey weighed 17-1/2 pounds, had a
nine-inch beard and the spurs measured three-quarters of an inch. No report
from her husband Eddie thus far has been received by The Courant.
Mrs. Sue Hawsey was the first
hunter to bring a turkey to The Courant this season. Sue killed the gobbler
Saturday morning. The Tom weighed 16-1/2 pounds, had a six-inch beard and the
spurs measured 13/16 of an inch.
Billy Crosby caught this bass
last Thursday. It weighed eight pounds, and Billy caught the fish in the mouth.

Donkey basketball at EHS on
April 1: For a fun-filled evening of entertainment plan to attend the Donkey
Basketball Games at Evergreen High School’s Memorial Gymnasium on Friday night,
April 1, at seven o’clock. This promises to be the craziest show on earth – wilder
than a rodeo and funnier than a circus!!
Band members will play
students in the first game and the teachers and community leaders will get into
action in the second fun-filled “contest.’

MARCH 28, 1968
This is the defensive
alignment that Coach Wendell Hart’s Evergreen Aggies will start with in the
jamboree. On the line are Ernest Shipp, Roger Waller, Eddie Ralls, Jimmy
Hamiter and Forrest Simpson; at linebacker Tommy Weaver, Buck Quarles and Jimmy
Bell and the deep men are Hollis Tranum, Jimmy Hart and Leon Hinson. The Aggies
will play T.R. Miller in the first period and Greenville in the third frame.
Several hundred loyal fans are expected to trip to Brewton to preview the ’69
club.
These men will be the
starters when the Evergreen High Aggies go on offense in the jamboree at T.R.
Miller High School at 7:30 Friday night. They are wingback Tommy Weaver, right
end Ernest Shipp, right tackle Jimmy Hamiter, right guard Roger Waller,
fullback Elliott (Buck) Quarles, quarterback Jimmy Hart, center Ralph Deason,
left guard Eddie Ralls, tailback Don Montgomery, left tackle Forrest Simpson
and left end Charlie Wild.
Lyeffion hosts spring
jamboree: Lyeffion will hold a spring jamboree with Repton, Red Level and
Coffeeville March 29 at 7 p.m. Each school will play two 12-minute quarters.
The schools will draw to see who they will play on the field just prior to the
game. Admission will be 50 cents and $1.

County Schools Plan ‘Play
Day’ On April 10 – “All work and no play, makes Jill a dull girl,” will not be
true of the students of Conecuh County during the month of April. For the first
time in the history of the local schools, every child will have the opportunity
to participate in some form of activity during Play Day.
On Fri., April 10, 1953, at
nine o’clock, all high school students in the county will meet at Brooks
Stadium in Evergreen to actively engage in at least one activity which they
have learned in the physical education classes in their local school. Every
grade will perform beginning with the seventh grade girls who will have the
Stride Ball Relay, through the 12-grade boys who will have tug-of-war. There
will be no competition between schools as all children will be divided into
color groups and play in their groups of the same color regardless of their
individual school.
In addition to this program
of all children playing, the healthiest boy and girl from each school will be
presented at an honor court. Four boys and four girls in the county will be
selected, one couple from each school, and this will indeed be one of the
highest honors any student could receive in the county.
The Repton PTA will sponsor a
barbecue Thursday night, April 2, on the high school football field.
The T.R. Miller High School
Band will play and parade on the field. T.R. Miller has one of the better bands
in the State of Alabama. Bewley’s Chuck Wagon Game, string band from Texas,
will play when the high school band is not playing.
The Orange Bowl football game
will be shown in the high school auditorium.

Baseball lovers in Evergreen
and Conecuh County are in for some swell baseball contests this spring and
summer. Local baseball addicts have agreed to give time and money to the
perfection of an A-1 team. A team that will be a whole lot better than the one
that finished in the cellar last August is in prospect. Prexy Murphy and his
cohorts are keeping the postman busy and the wires hot in search of ball
players that will give you a hard fighting team.
The Greenies won’t be the
only team in the Alabama-Florida league to sport a new home. The Troy Trojans
have nearly completed their plant and are ready to go. Reports from there say
that the home folks are taking more interest in the Trojans than ever before.
They will have Sunday and night games to look forward to. The Andalusia Rams
will have lights also.
The subject of finance is
usually boring, but it is most essential to a pennant contender. It is to be
hoped that local fans will buy several tickets each during the drive. By doing
so, they will assure the Greenies a flying start and assure themselves entrance
to some good ball games.
Evergreen High School: The
biggest surprise of last week occurred when Mr. Hanks told the student body
that some of the best basketball players on the junior teams were to play in a
state tournament in Montgomery. This game was scheduled for Saturday. They did
not win the tournament but they showed good sportsmanship and we feel very
proud of them. Vaughn Fountain, who was selected to play on the second teams,
was awarded a medal.

MARCH 28, 1923
Baseball: The baseball team
of the State Secondary Agricultural School began the season with a victory over
Georgiana, witnessed by a fair crowd in spite of the threatening weather. The
boys are working every afternoon and are improving rapidly. The game was
featured by the pitching of Dave Lewis and three base hits by Amos and Hines.

Brewton Fri., March 30, at 3:15 p.m. at Gantt’s Field.
J.D. Deming has been catching
some very fine trout recently. Five fish were landed the aggregate weight of
which was 25 pounds. Two of the number weighed 6-3/4 pounds and 6-1/2 pounds,
respectively. Jeff seems to know when the signs are right.
