Local weather observer Harry
Ellis reported .57 inches of rain on May 15 and .41 inches on May 16. He
reported a high of 85 degrees on May 14 and a low of 51 on May 12.
Nearly 120 Conecuh County
seniors will receive their high school diplomas tomorrow (Friday) night at
Hillcrest High School and Sparta Academy in Evergreen.
Hillcrest’s graduation
exercises will be held at Brooks Memorial Stadium in Evergreen, and Sparta’s
graduation exercises will be held at Richard Brown Gymnasium in Evergreen. Both
ceremonies were set to start at 7 p.m.
During tomorrow night’s
commencement ceremonies both schools will honor their respective valedictorians
and salutatorians. Pia Marie A. Cumagun is this year’s valedictorian at Sparta,
and Jonarius Antoine Stallworth is the valedictorian at Hillcrest. Hayden
Armuelles is the salutatorian at Sparta, and Willie Keontra McCaskill is the
salutatorian at Hillcrest.
The Conecuh County Health
Department officially dedicated its new building on Wild Avenue Friday morning
with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the building’s lobby. Cutting the ribbon were
Clinic Supervisor Debra King, State Health Officer Donald Williamson and Home
Health Supervisor Jean Brawner.

Local weather observer Harry Ellis reported .22 inches of
rain on May 19. He also reported highs of 85 degrees on May 17 and May 18 and
lows of 45 degrees on May 21 and May 22.
James Powell and Kristy Sims have been leaders in their
class at Hillcrest High School throughout the year. At graduation ceremonies,
the two will lead their classmates one last time… as valedictorian and
salutatorian.
Commencement exercises for the graduating class will be
held Tues., June 1, beginning at 7 p.m. at Brooks Memorial Stadium.
Mack Roberts, Alabama Highway Director, announced today
that the contract for repairing the bridge on I-65 was let. The apparent low
bidder was McInnis Corp., Montgomery, with an apparent low bid of $283,000.
The bridge, which collapsed after an 18-wheeler hit the
concrete support, fell on I-65, blocking the entire southbound roadway. The
accident occurred just after midnight on Wednesday (May 19) morning. The
roadway was opened to traffic that evening by 7:30 p.m.
Mandy Riley was awarded the Joe Wayne Wright Jr. Memorial
Scholarship during Honors Day ceremonies at Sparta Academy on May 20.
Presenting the award to Mandy was Mrs. Pat Wright, mother of Joe Wright Jr.
This is the second year this scholarship has been awarded.

Evergreen High School will hold graduation exercises
Friday night at eight o’clock in Brooks Memorial Stadium, according to
Principal John W. Floyd.
Amy Gates is valedictorian of the 1978 graduating class
at Evergreen High School. Mary Howard is salutatorian.
Lyeffion High School baccalaureate-graduation exercises
will be held Friday night, May 26, at 7 p.m. The exercises will take place in
the high school gymnasium.
Steve Searcy, age 17, has been selected valedictorian of
the 1978 graduating class of Lyeffion High School. Vickey Goldthrip, age 18,
has been selected salutatorian of Lyeffion High School.
Graduation exercises will be held at Repton High School
at eight o’clock Friday night in the school gymnasium.
Maxine DuBose has been named valedictorian of the
graduating class at Repton High School. David Bell has been named salutatorian
of the Class of 1978.
Haskew Page Jr., principal of Conecuh County High School,
announces that graduation exercises will be held in the high school auditorium
at Castleberry at 7:30 Friday evening, May 26.
Picked on the highest grade point average, Darryl Crane
is this year’s valedictorian of the graduating class at CCHS. Juanita Baggett
was selected as salutatorian with the second highest grade point average in the
class.
Graduation exercises (at Sparta Academy) will be held
Friday night, May 26, in the Sparta gymnatorium.
Gray Stevens has been named valedictorian of the 1978
graduating class of Sparta Academy. Harry Crabtree is salutatorian.

Graduation exercises (at
Repton High School) will be at eight o’clock Friday night, May 31.
Betty Jo Richards was named
valedictorian of the graduating class of 1963, which was announced by H.E.
Penny, principal of Repton High School. Faye Ellis has been chosen as
salutatorian of the 1963 graduating class of Repton High School.
Alva Nann Cary has been named
valedictorian of Conecuh County High School with an average of 94 for the past
four years. Judy Worrells has been named salutatorian of Conecuh County High
School with an average of 93 for the past four years.
Glenn Calvin Cook, well known
local insurance man, died late Tuesday afternoon, a victim of a heart seizure.
He was 52 years old.
Mr. Cook was stricken while
driving in his automobile on Spring Street just off Bruner Avenue around six
o’clock p.m. His car crashed into one parked on the street after the attack
caused him to lose control.
An ambulance was called and
he was rushed to the hospital, but was dead on arrival.
A native and lifelong
resident of this county, Mr. Cook was well and favorably known. For a number of
years, he had operated his own general insurance agency. At one time, he was
employed at the local post office.
Mr. Cook was a veteran of
World War II and the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War
II, and was called back to duty during the Korean conflict.

53 To Receive Diplomas At
C.C.T.S. Friday Night: Graduating exercises (at Conecuh County Training School)
will be held in the auditorium Friday night at 8 p.m. Dr. Robert C. Hatch,
Supervisor of Instruction of the Division of Negro Education, State Department
of Education, Montgomery, Ala., will deliver the commencement address.
City Politics Warming, Five
Announce This Week: The local political front was broadened by the entry of
five new candidates for places on the city council. The total now in the race
for council posts is nine with five to be elected. Tues., June 1, is the last
day for qualifying.
The five announcing for
council posts this week are J.W. Shannon, H.H. Beasley, H.J. Kinzer, H.A. Deer
and D.T. Stuart.
There were no further
announcements for mayor. Present mayor, J.H. Robison, and M.M. Cardwell
announced for this office last week.
The first primary of the
municipal elections will be held on June 29. A second, if necessary, will be
held on July 27. Candidates nominated in the primary elections will be entered
in the general election to be held Sept. 20. New officials will take office
Oct. 1, 1948.
Frank M. Hart, age 72,
beloved citizen of the Old Town community, died at his home Wed., May 19,
following an illness of many months.
Mr. Hart was a native of
the community in which he died, and had lived his entire life there.
He is survived by a wife
and one son, Wendell Hart of Evergreen.
