Eleven-year-old Jackson Gorum killed his first turkey on Sunday morning while hunting with his grandfather, David Gorum. The turkey, which had a 9.5-inch beard, weighed 18 pounds and had one-inch spurs. Jackson shot the gobbler from 12 steps away with a .20-gauge shotgun loaded with No. 5 shot.

Sparta Academy’s baseball team dropped to 0-3 on the season Monday of last week after an 11-1 loss to Class AAA Clarke Prep in Grove Hill.

Hillcrest High School opened the 2008 season Friday with a double header against Escambia County High School in Atmore.
Escambia won the first game, 15-2, and edged out the Jags, 8-1, in the second game of the twin bill.
(Standout Hillcrest players in those games included Marc Barlow, Quinton Nettles, Alexander Nevlous and Neil Presley. Brandon Armstrong was Hillcrest’s head coach.)

Sparta Academy’s softball team showed plenty of fight, but came up short in a 17-0 loss to Class AAA Clarke Prep Monday of last week in Grove Hill.
“Now that we’ve hung in there against these larger schools, we’ve just got to continue to work hard, string us one or two wins in a row together and get out confidence back,” Sparta softball coach Mike Sims said. “We can turn this thing around.”

Herman Matthews of Evergreen caught this big mouth bass last Thursday afternoon in an undisclosed fishing hole. Matthews good-naturedly declined to say where he caught the bass, but did say that it took a couple of minutes to bring in the fish. He caught the bass with a rod and net, using a green rubber worm for bait.

Lake Higdon, eight, killed this turkey during a youth hunt Sunday at Bermuda. Higdon is the son of Rod and Margaret Higdon.

Just one shot did in this red fox for C.C. Rogers who lives on Rt. 1, Owassa. Rogers shot the fox with a .22-calibre rifle. It isn’t too often that you hear of anyone bagging a red fox with a rifle.
