Trip Hendrix will emcee Junior Miss: Trip Hendrix will be the Master of Ceremonies for the upcoming Conecuh County Junior Miss program this Saturday evening.
The program begins at 7 p.m. at Ed Reid Technical College.
(Contestants that year included eventual winner Marcia Michelle Griffin, Stephanie Ann Bullock, Sunshine Lualhati Floyd, La’Kishma L. Johnson, Amity Michelle Reeves, Stephanie Diana Cole, Tifanee Renee Grace, Gina Michelle Harper, Monique S. Johnson and Jessika Monique Wallace.)

Evergreen weather observer Harry Ellis reported .25 inches of rain on April 28, .12 inches on April 29 and .62 inches of rain (along with some hail) on May 3. He reported a high of 83 degrees on May 3 and lows of 51 degrees on April 30 and May 1. Total rainfall for the month of April 1998 was 6.61 inches.

Mark West announces run for Senate seat: Mark West, 40, of Selma has announced his candidacy for State Senate Seat 23.
The seat is currently held by Hank Sanders.
West is presently serving his second term on the Selma City Council.

Miss Rubicon of 1973 is Susie Neese, a ninth-grader at Evergreen High School and the daughter of B.A. Neese Jr. The first alternate is Brenda Royster also a ninth-grader and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Royster and second alternate is Deborah Adams, an eleventh-grader and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Adams. They were chosen in a contest held last Thursday night at Evergreen City School and will be featured in The Rubicon, the EHS annual.

Shopping center will be built Hiway 31 South: Evergreen is to get a major shopping center it is announced today.
T.W. Persons Realty of Evergreen and Aronov Realty Co. of Montgomery state that they have completed negotiations for a site for a large shopping center.
The center will be located on the M.S. Holley property on Highway 31 South, adjoining Brior Auto Parts. Aronov Realty Co. is one of the capital city’s largest developers and developed Normandale, Montgomery’s first shopping center.
Occupants of the center and other details will be announced at a later date.

Larry E. Byrd, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Byrd of Evergreen, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force upon graduation from School of Military Sciences for Officers at Lackland AFB, Texas.
A 1960 graduate of Evergreen High School, he earned his B.S. degree in engineering in 1972 from Michigan State University. The lieutenant, who entered the Air Force in 1961, has completed a year of duty in Vietnam.

Prominent Belleville Man Dies Suddenly: A.L. Riggs, age 65, well known and much-beloved citizen of Belleville, died suddenly Thursday morning, April 29.
Mr. Riggs was a good citizen who enjoyed the love and esteem of a wide circle of neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Belleville Baptist Church Friday afternoon conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.L. Higdon, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. R.D. Wright.

Rev. Sam Granade Is New Baptist Pastor: Rev. Sam Granade, who will graduate from the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville with the Master of Theology degree on May 7, has accepted a call to be pastor of the First Baptist Church of this city. The call was extended to Rev. Granade Sun., April 25. He notified the pulpit committee of his acceptance the latter part of last week.
He expects to move here June 1, and will conduct his first service as pastor on June 6. He was here and preached at both morning and evening services on April 18.
Rev. Granade is a native of Leroy, Washington County, Ala. He graduated from Howard College with the A.B. degree before entering the seminary. He served as army Chaplain in the recent World War for a period of four years.

Road Contract Let: The Courant learns that Keenan & Kyser were the successful bidders for the Evergreen-Belleville road before the State Highway Commission yesterday. It is stated that work will be started immediately.

Belleville Junior High School Exercises: The faculty of the Belleville Junior High School invite you to be present at their commencement exercises the week of May 6. The program for the week will be given in the High School auditorium. Friday, May 11, 8 p.m. – Graduation exercises, address by Supt. J.A. Keller.

Dr. Sanders was here Monday in the interest of his Congressional campaign. The doctor says he is meeting with encouragement wherever he goes.

Lewis Johnston of Brooklyn and Miss Bertha Stone of Brewton were quietly married on Sunday evening at the residence of R.G. Kendall, Dr. J.G. Dickinson officiating. The happy couple will reside at Brooklyn.

Rev. C.A. Cornell and Mrs. Cornell have been in St. Louis for several days visiting their daughter, Mrs. Hill. The Business Men’s Evangelistic Club held services at the Methodist Church Sunday morning for Dr. Cornell. F.H. Chappelle, W.M. Newton and Lamar Matkin were the assigned speakers with the president, Dr. Hairston, presiding.

The new jail is being painted.

The lime for the new courthouse has been received.

Col. P.D. Bowles has returned from the Baldwin circuit court.

Capt. H.M. Rumbley has resigned, and M.A. Gantt has been elected in his stead as captain of the Conecuh Guards.

The storehouse and contents of James Barron & Son at Cohassett was destroyed by fire on the night of the 2nd inst. Supposed to be the work of an incendiary. Loss $1,000 with insurance.

The election of town officers will take place next Monday. As far as we can learn, everything will be harmonious. The principal office to be filled is that of mayor. Mr. W.H. Herrington is the youngest man on the board, and has been mayor for three terms, and the voters of Evergreen should go to the polls next Monday and give this faithful officer their unanimous endorsement, for he unquestionably merits this distinction.

Closing Exercises of Castleberry School: The most pleasant and entertaining event that it has been our pleasure to attend in some time was the entertainment given at the close of Prof. D.T. Bozeman’s school at this place, on the evening of the 20th inst.

Mr. Belknap, the accommodating superintendent of the railroad, kindly gave the use of the warehouse for the occasion.
