100-year-old news highlights from The Wilcox Progressive Era

What follows are 100-year-old news excerpts from the July 5, 1917 edition of The Wilcox Progressive Era newspaper in Camden, Ala.

List of officers, Wilcox Lodge, No. 80: Stonewall McConnico, worshipful master; F.J. McWilliams, senior warden; J.H. Harper, junior warden; W.M. Fitzgerald, treasurer; E.I. McBryde, secretary; R.R. Carothers, senior deacon; J.S. Woodson, junior deacon; W.W. McConnico, chaplain; H.W. Hughes, tyler.

The Methodist Church will be dedicated on the third Sunday in July. Bishop McCoy is expected to preach the dedication sermon.

Hon. J.M. Bonner has volunteered his services to the government and if accepted expects to leave in August for the officers training camp.

A Prince In Buckskins: The Pine Hill Dramatic Club presented the “Prince in Buckskins” at the Grammar School Auditorium on Friday evening last to a large and appreciative audience. This was their second appearance in Camden and their reputation as entertainers was again attested to.
Special mention should be made of little Annie Laurie Byrne and Bernard Shaw, who won the hearts of all in their song, “Won’t You Take a Walk With Me?”

Mrs. F.L. Moore Jr. and little daughter Annie Lee have returned from Mobile where they have been visiting for several days.

Monroeville expects to celebrate the Fourth in glorious style. A barbecue will be given and preparations for entertaining a large crowd have been made.

Beatrice Lodge No. 691, A.F.&A.M., the following new officers were elected: William H. Hestle, worshipful master; J. Neal Andress, senior warden; Julius J. McMillan, junior warden; Stephen D. Andress, treasurer; Walter A. McPherson, secretary; Aaron P. Majors, chaplain; William W. Hestle, senior deacon; Leslie J. Robbins, junior deacon; John Sanders, senior steward; Mack Helton, junior steward; Wick W. Riley, senior tyler.

Hon. S.D. Bloch is looking after business interests in Mobile this week.

Messrs. Lee Bonner and R. McCracken of Rosebud were Camden visitors Monday.

Mr. Carlisle Dale of Oak Hill was in Camden Monday.

CANTON BEND: Canton ladies all enjoyed a picnic at Cobb’s Landing last Thursday, all the young people were present, and enjoyed the boat riding and fishing.

PINE HILL: The fine new residence of Mr. J.B. Cox, which is being built here, is now under construction and will soon be completed.
The Dramatic Players presented “A Prince in Buckskins” of the 28th, a large audience seemed to appreciate the attraction very much.

The Dramatic Club went to Camden on Friday last and reports received indicate that they were very much pleased with the trip and appeared to appreciate the large audience that attended the performance of “A Prince in Buckskins.”
