100-year-old news highlights from The Wilcox Progressive Era


What follows are 100-year-old news excerpts from the April 18, 1918 edition of The Wilcox Progressive Era newspaper in Camden, Ala.

We have received No. 1 of Vol. 1 of the Evergreen Enterprise. Mr. A.J. Kempton is editor and proprietor and his bow to the public is made with grace, dignity and a determination to be of material benefit to his town, county and state with the nation thrown in for good measure. Mr. Kempton is a good newspaper man as is evidenced by the first issue of the Enterprise, and the people of Evergreen should see to it that his efforts are well rewarded by giving him a big share of their patronage.

The Board of Trustees of Camden Grammar School will meet Friday night, May 3, for the purpose of nominating teachers for the ensuing school year. – J.W. Turnipseed, S.L. Jones, S.C. Godbold, Trustees.

In Loving Memory Of Mrs. L.F. Phelps, who was born Oct. 17, 1857 in Wilcox County, Ala., died at her home in Gastonburg April 5, 1918 of pneumonia, buried in Gastonburg cemetery by her pastor, L.C. Dewitt. She joined the Baptist Church in early life, and was a member of the Catherine church. Though her trials and burdens were many, she wore a smile and had a kind word for everyone.

Baptist Picnic: The third annual basket picnic of the Pine Barren Association will be held here at my farm Wednesday, April 24. It is hoped that we will have a good attendance from all parts of the association; any friends who care to join in with us for the day will be welcomed. We are expecting to have some speakers from a distance to discuss country church problems. – R.E. Lambert, Darlington, Ala.

Ex-Senator Frank S. White of Birmingham will be present and will deliver an address at the Pine Barren picnic at R.E. Lambert’s next Wednesday, the 24th. Something good may be expected from him.

NOTICE TO PUBLIC: The Board of Education will meet on Thurs., May 16, to nominate principal for the Wilcox County High School, and to attend to such other matters as may come before it. – O.C. Weaver, Supt. Education.

Rev. B.H. Grier brought to this office last week some fine specimens of Irish potatoes he raised this year. He planted this patch of potatoes in December last and began to supply his table in March.

NOTICE: My cattle are branded “O” in right side, tagged in right ear. – H.H. Dale, Camden, Ala.

There will be no preaching at A.R.P. Church next Sabbath, the pastor will be absent at Presbytery at Pine Level. Bible class, five o’clock p.m. Wednesday.



The Peach Tree school children had a merry Easter hunt at Mrs. Comer Gibson’s.

Lamison: The school, having been suspended for several weeks on account of measles, has resumed its former duties.
